The actual record without Mackay is:

No Mackay: 22 wins, 30 losses (42.3%)
Overall: 140 wins, 109 losses, 1 draw (56.0%)

And excluding the Neil Craig era the record is:

No Mackay: 14 wins, 10 losses (58.3%)
Overall: 96 wins, 1 draw, 62 losses (60.4%)

In years we made finals since Neil Craig:

No Mackay: 9 wins, 4 losses (69.2%)
Overall: 66 wins, 1 draw, 30 losses (68.0%)

So since Neil Craig got sacked we have a slightly higher winning record without Mackay than we did overall in those periods

Why exclude the Craig games? They happened.

Why exclude the Craig games? They happened.

Because:

a) They were more than 5 seasons ago
b) It was widely accepted Mackay was better in the Craig era
c) As a whole we were a worse team during the Mackay-Craig days
d) Mackay missed a significant chunk of football through injury in 2010 and 2011 when we finished around the bottom 4, skewing the results in favor of seasons we performed poorly

So in other words, since Mackay has widely been regarded as a mediocre player, we have a slightly higher winning record when he doesn't play. Overall we have a better record with Mackay, but in my opinion that's heavily skewed due to our record in 2010 and 2011 when he missed many games through injury. Of course one could argue that the reason we lost so many games in 2010 and 2011 was due to Mackay's injury, though I reckon that's a bit of a stretch

What about games where he kicks a goal?

One of D-Mac's great skills has been timing his brief moments out of the team with our toughest games and road trips

Who said he's not skillful?

Our record in finals when he has played - 6 wins 7 Losses

Our record in finals when he hasnt played - 0 wins 0 losses

Always one of the first picked.

That's a thin argument.

a) More than 5 seasons ago? Why does that matter? Footy happened back then.

b) You might as well extend it to exclude 2018 matches because the season was BurtonHassed. Or matches in late 2015, because the club was going through hell and results suffered.

c) As far as "widely regarded as a mediocre player", by who? He's played with Craig, Sanderson, Bickley, Walsh, Camporeale and Pyke as his head coach and he's basically been a first choice player for every single one of them.

Eh. 2011 was a statistical outlier because Mackay missed an unusually large amount of games that year, more than double any other season. Including that season quite obviously skews the data and makes the analysis worthless.

Love to see the old "every coach has picked him" argument pop up again too. Always a classic, that one. In any case, his B&F positions, as voted by the coaches, clearly indicate he is mediocre.

Rory Sloane record in finals when he has played - 4 wins, 5 losses.
Our record in finals when he hasn't played - 2 wins, 1 loss.

So if "every coach has picked him" is too trite, why roll out the "widely regarded as a mediocre player" generalisation? Again, widely regarded by who?

He is regarded by the coaches in their own voting system as mediocre.

I just did my B&F voting for this year. Mine is a little different where i just went for 5 4 3 2 1 to our 5 best players. Dmac has No votes. Laird has won it a canter on 60 votes with Crouch and Gibbs 20 votes behind.

Yep, he missed 14 games in 2011 with a major injury and in all other years tends to miss 2-5 games through minor injuries.

He's played 9 SANFL games since debut: 3 in 2008, 1 in 2013, 2 in 2015, 1 in 2016 and 2 in 2017. The game in 2016 was returning from injury, the other times he was dropped, and he's been the non-playing emergency on 1-2 other occasions
