So do you conclude Fremantle are tapering before finals, or is this the same kind of blind optimism that thought the thrashing at the hands of the Saints wasn't a sign the side wasn't good enough?

This is not tapering and it is not blind optimism. It's pointing out that it's never as good as it seems or as bad as it seems. We'll be there or thereabouts. There's a lot of time to pass before finals.But by then, we are very likely to have a top 4 spot and probably a top 2 spot. We have played much better footy than we are at the moment and I can see us playing better footy again, at some stage.

Sydney lost their opening game to GWS last year, then followed it up a few weeks later with a big loss to NM. From that position they made a grand final. I think we can make a GF from our start.
