Ok, I have read many many posts, threads, phantoms etc.
I think I am ready to put forward my draft selections via a phantom draft.
I don't profess to know all the kids ( I have watched all video content i could get), but I have tried to make a call that the clubs just may do.
I know footy and I know the AFL and I hope I get close.
So go ahead, lets discuss...
2012 National Draft First Round
#1 GWS Lachlan Whitfield VIC Mid/Fwd Dandenong Stingrays
Best player in the draft.
#2 GWS Jonothan O’Rourke VIC Mid Calder Cannons
Next best and GWS will get him or Toumpas as another mid
#3 GWS Lachlan Plowman VIC KPD/Def Calder Cannons
Need a key defender and Plowman delivers here.
#4 MELB Jimmy Toumpas SA Mid/Def Woodville West Torrens
Toumpas will fall at Melbournes feet. They won't give a second thought to Wines.
#5 WB Oliver Wines VIC Mid Bendigo Pioneers
Doggies will grab Wines in a heartbeat.
#6 WB Sam Mayes SA Mid/fwd North Adelaide
I think Doggies will take Mayes from under Port's nose. Others had Menzel and maybe a Macrae here, they miss out on O'Rourke. I think they will want a sure thing. I considered Macrae here also.
#7 PORT Nick Vlastuin VIC Mid/Def Northern Knights
Like Doggies they will pass on Menzel as they would want a sure thing amidst the turmoil of the club. Someone they can build a team around along with Boak. I do think they would want a backman so Jaksch just misses. It was Macrae or Vlastuin, the latter replacing Jacobs.
#8 BRIS Jackson Macrae VIC Fwd/Mid Oakleigh Chargers
The Lions will be very happy with this midfielder. Another to their growing stock.
#9 RICH Brodie Grundy SA Ruckman Sturt
Richmond will take Grundy the best Ruckman in the draft (behind F/S Daniher) to complement or even replace Maric in a couple of years. I think he could just as easily compliment Riewoldt up forward also. I know they have Vickery also, but there are still questions on him.
#10 ESS Joe Daniher (Father/Son) VIC Ruckman/KPF Calder Cannons
What can you say? A steal?
#11 CARL Jesse Lonergan TAS Midfielder Launceston
The blues are in a good position they can go tall or for a mid. I think they need at least one of both. Players like Menzel, Stringer, Garlett, Jaksch, Corr, O'Brien are available here. I took Lonergan here. Carlton see themselves as gunning for a flag in 2013,14 &15. Lonergan will hit the ground running. Stringer came really close here. If Watson plays more regularly, there won't be a need for a Backman at this pick.
#12 GWS Troy Menzel VIC Mid-F Central Districts
Wow, this would be the steal of the draft in the boy gets his knees right. He will be a gun as the GWS cement finals spots...that is only IF
#13 GC Kristian Jaksch VIC KPD-F Oakleigh
GWS will easily go for the best available here and Jacksch will fit in nicely with their future plans.
#14 GWS Aidan Corr VIC KPD-F Northern Knights
Gold Coasts first live pick here, I had them going for Simpson, but after revelations about having a baby daughter I think he may get to a WA side. Unless someone takes a risk, like a collingwood or Geelong. Corr instead is a Key Position, he will come good with the team.
#15 NM Jake Stringer VIC Mid-Utility Bendigo Pioneers
I think there will be three names that North will have in mind. Kennedy, Hrovat, and Stringer. Hrovat has worked with Brent Harvey and Kennedy is seen to be like the mentor. North need to eventually replace Harvey. Then there is Stringer. A gun. North may seem like taking a risk as they're team is pretty settled and still have McKenzie coming through as a mid. I think they will move Atley to the midfield and hope for Jacobs at a later pick whilst picking up Stringer, knowing full well that Ziebell recovered very well from a broken leg under North's physio's and Saunders.
#16 GEEL Taylor Garner VIC Mid/For Dandenong
Geelong would be spewing that Menzel went at 12 having backed themselves to help him recover. Garner will need to get his arms right, but he could be a perfect fit for the midfield or eventually a chapman.
#17 FRE Tom Clurey VIC KPD Murray Bushrangers
Freo would have taken Corr a Defender, but miss out to GC. They take the next best Key Defender Clurey here. I think they also would have loved a ready made Lonergan.
#18 COLL Tim O’Brien SA KPF Glenelg
with 3 of the next 4 picks Collingwood will try to get someone up forward to eventually replace Lynch fresh in from West Coast whom replaced Dawes whom shipped out to Melbourne.
#19 COLL Ben Kennedy SA Midfield/For Glenelg
Another glenelg boy who will replace Didak.
#20 ADE Mason Wood VIC Forward Geelong Falcons
Will get a versatile forward, maybe someone who can fill a gap in their forward line.
#21 COLL Dayle Garlett WA F/M Swan Districts
Collingwood will take a chance here 2 out of 3 ain't bad. They will have a good chance of 3/3 by their standards.
#22 WB Tanner Smith VIC KPD North Ballarat
Having got Wines and Mayes, they will go for a Key Back, if not, I think Hrovat may be another mid, they would like to have.
#23 SYD Nicholas Graham VIC Mid Gippsland Power
I think Sydney will be thinking Hrovat, but Graham will fit in well for the Swans.
2012 National Draft End Of First Round Compensation
#24 BRIS Tim Membrey (VIC - Fwd)
Having got Macrae, Brisbane will look to a forward.
