What was the highest scoring round in history, in terms of average scores per game?

This is one for Ron The Bear

I was looking at some stuff last night and noticed that Round 11, 1984 was extra-ordinary. If this is not the highest scoring round the one that beats it must be amazing.

1984rd11.JPG

The lowest score was 13.13 by St Kilda, just look at the rest of the scores.

The Fitzroy vs North Melbourne game was insane, 166 to 152.

Can anyone remember this round and was there a reason for all the high scores. Was this the zenith of football?

There was one season I think in the 70's where the weather was unseasonably dry all winter that led to a lot high scores, can't remember which year but it's mentioned on the article for that season.

6 games v 9 games, wondering whether any of the AFL rounds compete with the old VFL. Games often did score higher in the past so I would not be surprised if many of the highest round scores were from the old 6 game format.

Thanks for this. Really interesting. I would never have guessed that round 11, 1984 would be so far down the list.

1980 to 1985 was a great era in footy.

That is 198 goals in one afternoon of footy.

If you had five radios tuned into the five games at once it would have been a goal every 40 seconds of play.

Just got confirmation that the 1982 season was the highest scoring VFL/AFL season, but the 1981 WAFL season does in fact have it covered by on average 10 points.
I was young but I seem to remember 1982/83 being affected by drought so the grounds may have been dry to play on even in winter.

You should look at the 1981 WAFL Season, Jeez the lowest team averaged over 100 points per game. That's insane

In the VFL in 1980 Fitzroy averaged 109 points a game which would comfortably make them the 2nd highest scoring side on the 2017 ladder (only 17 points less than Adelaide). They finished last.

Fitzroy 10.5 17.10 22.11 26.15 171

Carlton losing score of 145 is four goals more than they've managed in any match in the past three seasons.

In the VFL in 1980 Fitzroy averaged 109 points a game which would comfortably make them the 2nd highest scoring side on the 2017 ladder (only 17 points less than Adelaide). They finished last.

That was a particularly talented wooden spoon team. They beat the premiers and drew with the runners-up, and came from 51 points down against fourth-placed Carlton in the last game to just fail.

Bernie Quinlan, Garry Wilson, Conlan, McMahon, Irwin, Beecroft, Serafini, Chris Smith who I think led the Brownlow at the halfway mark that year. Rising Star equivalent in Marchesani. An ageing Len Thompson, Robert Walls, John Rantall, Max Richardson...
