Lower was very good, playing players in their ideal position makes a differance, hint "the Pav". I thought last night that Hill played one of his best games in recent times ( obviously wasn't tagged, was no need for the B & Ws ,playing a B grade side like Freo). It showed ,if given a bit of freedom ,he looked good, nice long penetrading kicks ,a few good high marks. I was having my doubts about him, I think next year will be Hill's year.

the last few weeks, he's been playing like the penny's dropping. even without the tag last night, he really scragged for the ball. there was a moment at the start of the game when the camera lingered on him and he just looked different. i think the boy's becoming the man. interesting period coming up for hilly.

Thought his kicking was a bit disappointing last night. Got better as the game went on and I wonder if the runner went out after he dropped the uncontested mark going back in defence in the 2nd quarter with a few choice words. Maybe a few of his teammates did as well which had him attack the ball with a bit more vigour in the 2nd half.

Wish he'd use his right foot a bit more as well. IMO it's a lot better than he thinks it is.

anyone having doubts about hill clearly dont know how hard it is for a featherweight with that much talent running around half injured in a team that has spent more time in the medical office than out on the field. he will be one of the best in the game in a couple of years time. he is nothing like wells or pearce or headland. people just need to get off his back and let him learn with maturity. every team has an outside gun, and that gun always looks better in a good side. this year we have lacked the inside players to get the ball out to him. when we have a fit squad next year hill will make all the doubters look like idiots

This post is so dumb, and riddled with the shit excuses we've heard all year.

Hill has the ability to be an inside gun. A player who wins his own ball. If you want him floating around packs waiting for the receive, great. Expect more games like the majority he's played this season, rather than the one he played last night.

hilly shouldnt have to be the inside player when we get our boys back. we won the clearances last night, low and behold hill gets 30 touches. he should be the finisher, and thats what he will be when we get our midfield back. we will revisit this in one years time.

i think the question we should be asking is why the hell did we beat the best team in the league in clearances when we have lost that stat all year, and that is without a lot of our best players

Thing was the tags had messed with his confidence and he was doing a lot of ball watching, last night he started winning his own footy and as his confidence rose he started really hitting the contests hard and running the way only he can (which is his greatest weapon, along with his kicking).

Yes he should. Our aim for Hill should be to for him to become a version of Ablett/Judd.

What you're advocating is turning Hill into a Des Headland clone. A downhill skier who looks good when the team is fully fit and winning.

What a waste of talent. I can't believe anyone would look at last night's game, having seen Hill's season, and argue that he should return to the role where he gets 13 possessions a game. What kind of moronic arseclownery is this?

That dropped mark wasn't squibbing.. it was one of the worst kicks I've seen this year, It is easy to mark a ball spinning on one axis.. not easy to mark one spinning on all three axes

when we get our players back, hill will not be used as an inside midfielder. he wont, because his running and kicking is his best asset which will see him played predominantly on the outside as a wingman. he can go in and get the ball when he has to as he did last night, but generally his role will be as the finisher, do you honestly expect the coaching staff to ask him to not play to his strengths?

Yeah, and just watch him get tagged out of games. Again and again. Sorry, that's idiocy.

There were a couple of occasions where he won the ball in a pack situation last night where I thought if he had known, if there was a block, or he had half a step on his opponent, he could have broken free from congestion, in a Judd/Ablett like fashion, and sprinted clear.

But you want him getting the handball receive? FMD

This is very astute. He IS good at getting the ball in traffic and obviously has lighting acceleration and elite evasiveness. If he had some blocks and people throwing weight around he could be a superb inside player.

he's not getting the protection that he needs at the moment, but. last year, morabito was his brother in arms, shepherding players off his run, but he hasn't received much of that this year. this year, he's had to run alone, and like last night, when he went for that run off half back only to be confronted by a wall at half forward and had to handball backwards because his running team mate couldn't keep up with him just ended up looking feckless. how many times did we see that this year? too many. some of that is hill not being smarter with his run. sometimes he just puts on the afterburners only to turn it over, but if he played it smarter and with the off the ball support, he'll be better for it.

Yep. The tools are there. I just hope the coaches see it and play him like that more often.

It was good to see him find some footy. But his disposal let him down, he still lacks confidence, time and time again he looks to hand pass first and when that option isn't there, he finds himself under pressure and his kick lets him down. He is quite indecisive with his decision making. He has a wonderful kicking technique, and is very quick. He just needs to back himself and his ability, because his indecisiveness cost him and us a few times last night, Hopefully once he gains some confidence he can use his strengths to his advantage.

first of all there is no need to get narky or have a go just because i have a different opinion.

secondly, it all depends on what sort of player you see hill as. is he judd or a montagna? i see him more as a montagna type. and i have never said that he wont get his own ball, all i was stating was that with a prime mids playing i.e your barlows, mundy's and morabito's hill should be able to get some more easy ball than he was able to this year, and should be able to become that finishing type player that we need. we all know he has not had as great a year this year as he did last, i believe that this year will be integral to his development in that he has had to try and find more of his own ball, sometimes he has unfortunately a lot of the time he hasnt

its amazing how inept a player can become when they have no confidence. as you say a full preseason and hopefully a better team around him will increase his confidence and those other aspects will pick up

Firstly, Hill is better than Morabito at winning his own ball. Morabito was yet to crack 20 possessions last year, something Hill did in his sixth game. Morabito should not be thought of as a midfield panacea, or even a 'prime mid'. He isn't that, and he is further from being that than Hill. I don't know why people thought his 13 possessions per game were essential to us last year.

Secondly, finishing players go missing massively in finals. Hill has more tools than simply being a finisher. If you think Hill's ceiling is Montagna, then we ballsed up that draft pick. Frankly, I would expect a much better player than Montagna in a draft that was as strong as 2008. So you can't have it both ways. You can't be effusive in your praise of our recruitment if you think our top draft pick in a strong draft will end up like Leigh Montagna.

I too think morabito was a little overrated last year, and im unsure as to whether he will end up being a midfielder or a forward, however he has all of the physical attributes to become a great big bodied midfielder in the mould of say a koutafides. but yes it is a little early to call him a prime mid i will admit, we really dont know how he is going to turn out, but hopes are very high for that boy by harves and the rest

i think montagna is a fantastic player  a goal kicking midfielder with pace and skills that gets a lot of the ball.......

He's a very good player. But you said about Hill

he will be one of the best in the game in a couple of years time

I wouldn't have Montagna in my top 20 in the game.

1. He's too unselfish
2. He doesn't like to burn the ball so he tends to hold it till there is a viable option. When the team is down on confidence like now there tends to be no leading players or in fact anyone who even wants the ball so Hill gets trapped with the thing because there isn't a good release option.

It's actually one of the things that should see him reach elite level, his decision making is excellent and his execution top class.

But yes he needs to confidence to kick at goal from anywhere around 50 and to generally take the high risk option.

I wouldn't have Montagna in my top 20 in the game.

well i guess its all about perception then, i would have montagna in my top 20. he will win stkildas b&f this year. and i would only have him behind hayes and reiwoldt last year as far as importance and game winning ability goes, and he actually came runner up in the best and fairest in a team that probably should have won a flag (how they lost that first final i will never know).... i think hill will be around that mark, if not better.
