Melbourne, (ESSENDON)
i know what all the essendon supporters think of hirdy, the guy is just an absolute champion
i think the game on saturday puts him ahead of carey
he equaled carey with two premierships and also has a brownlow, norm smith and three b&f's to add to it

by the way are any of the essendon fans going to the b&f on wed night???

You're dreaming.

Nird doesn't get the hard ball like Carey does.

a little bit of gloating is allowed but outlandishly stupid statements like "soft**** HIRD IS BETTER THEN THE GREAT MAN HIMSELF" will not be tolerated.

Yes Washy 1963,

I did watch the Grand Final.

Nird is a good player, but that receiver-type player is easier to find (and hence less valuable) than a player like Carey.

If you are looking for an heir-apparent for Carey then Koutoufides probably comes closest at the moment.

Next you'll start claiming that Lloyd wrote the Old Testament

why does everyone insist on tagging hird as a soft****
give me one example of where he has shown this because i can give you plenty to show that he isnt

hird proved himself by playing well when it was the most important, cant say the same thing about carey in the qualifying final

tigertank if you want to talk about receivers have a look at your whole midfield
campbell, daffy etc

Welshy... you stupid idiot... Hird is so soft if he had the injuries that The Great Man had during the Qualifying Final... he would not have made it on the park

soft**** HIRD would have placed himself in a hospital bed for 2 years... and said "Oh my Stress Fractures... cry cry cry"

You have The Umpires Love Child, we will keep The GREAT MAN as everyone Knows who is the King and who is the butt of (UMPIRE) jokes...

Hird has an edge in versatility - he can play just about anywhere and on anyone - and his field kicking is much better, and he is definately NOT soft.

But the Bombers don't base their entire game plan around him - like Carey - and he tends to get the 2nd or 3rd defender. Anyway, he can run on the ball and shake those tags. Put Hird in a team like Grant is with the Bullodgs and it would be interesting.

The clash with North ( the first quarter blitz one ) saw Carey on Hird for about 2 seconds BUT I did see Kouta give Carey a touch up when going one on one this year. Carey's more bash/crash and he gets amped thru' aggression. Hird gets more possessions roaming around.

Carey, Hird, Grant and Kouta really are the 'big guns' and its always a pleasure to watch them do their thing injury free. They should ply on each other more often.

Both players are champions
I'm sure any club in the league would be happy to get either one.
The players themselves cannot be compared as they play different styles of games bu both are true champions

I was wondering when this argument would crop up. You could probably compare Hird to Carey only if Hird spent most of his time at centre half forward, and he doesn't. So it's like comparing apples and oranges. As Bernie pointed out, Hird can sometimes get the opposition's 2nd or 3rd best defender (and even then, he's very hard to match up on) and I'll add here that Carey will often have 2 or 3 opposition players keeping him company. By the way, anyone who thinks Hird is soft has never watched him play....I've seen him back into packs to take marks that the likes of Glenn Archer would be proud of. In 100 years time when they're naming the "Team of the Double Century", both Carey and Hird will be in the team (although Carey will be Captain and Hird the vice-captain
wink.gif
)

Last word to someone (I think it was Rice80SF) who commented on this board, "Carey will kill you with a single punch. Hird will kill you with a thousand cuts".

Nice bit of baiting Walshy....Hird is fine player no doubt about it..not soft..I have seen him back into packs but Carey is on a different level as a player.Carey is the go to man at North, he does not have a lloyd or lucas to help out, he gets the best defender
every week plus another player to double team him, not some duds like Nicholson or Febey who played on Hird in the GF..its Silvagni,Jakovich,Graham etc..not the third best like Hird gets.
Here a bit more info on St James.. a struggling Western suburbs local team asked some star players for jumpers etc to auction
at a fund raiser, Chris Grant,Nathan Buckley,
and Wayne Carey all were happy to help out...
a certain No 5 in red and black colours didnt want know about it...good player..but he is a rich spoilt little brat with no sympathy for the working class...doesnt deserve to be mentioned in the same breath with the likes of Carey,Kouta etc.

Go Roos

rodman ill put it simply for you
who would you rather have playing for your side????

hird was in a team like chris grant is now in 96, the year he won the brownlow
he was the go to man, we had a team full of kids, lloyd, lucas, blumfield, caracella etc had all played less than 50 games
there was long, misiti and mercuri there but that is no different to libba, johnson, smith hudson etc.
the greatest thing about hird is his heart and his love for his club, it far outways anyother player in the comp

James Hird is the best player in the competition. Im sure everyone would love to him on their side, because he can win a game off his own boot.

Not only is he a great player, but he is a leader. I reckon people think he's soft because he isn't afraid to say that his family is equally important to him as football.

By the way, Im and eagles supporter, not a bombers supporter.

hird was never going to leave the club, that was just the media over playing the real story as per normal
thats a good way to build your opinon on a player on whether or not he donates a jumper to a western suburbs football club, who was it keilor?????
im sure hirdy does his fair share of charity work
carey i have a bit of a groin injury so im not going to try, i dont care if its a final, i just want to look good, and stir the crowd in my complete arrogance
carey was a great player
he is now a good player
hird is now the greatest

Thats a BIG call Walshy.

Plenty of players luv their clubs.

Chris Grant was offered a bucket load of money, captancy etc to go to Port & turned them down to stay with the dogs at a time when they could have folded at any moment.

How much does Martin luv North or Burke luv the Saints?

Rooboy. What is your problem with Hird?

Don't you think he's good enough to get a game at North? Is he too much of a "soft****"?

Even allowing for gloating and a hang-over, your comments about King Carey v Hird are stupid.

Carey has carried and played with far more serious injuries than Hird ie 1994 finals, 1997 and the finals, 2000 and the finals. Hird has had what amount to nearly a two year lay-off. What player wouldn't be rarin' to go with that amount of time away from football.

CAREY IS THE COMPLETE PLAYER.

He receives the most attention from other clubs and receives the least legimate free kicks from the umpires.

Years 1994, 1998 and 2000, Carey should have won the Brownlow. Check the stats.

He has been named All-Australian Captain and MVP and many ocassions.

Gloat in peace because next year we are coming to get you.

Just got into this on the Eagles forum.

Facts (IMHO):

1. Over their careers thus far Carey wins hands down - primarily because of the crucial role he plays in the team. Mind you he has been head and shoulders above everyone.

2. But just at the moment Hird and Kouta (with possibly Voss) are the best there is - they are just unstoppably and provide their teams with 5 or 5 goals more in output by just being sensational.

3. If Carey continues to go into decline and Hird can stay fit then the equation my shift over their careers - remember Hird does not rely on place or strength but reflexes and brains - they can still come to the fore at the age of 35 - Carey will be balder than Rex Hunt by then and long since out of the game.

Answer, long term... who knows?

Carey this Carey that

Hird this Hird that

I think Kouta is light years ahead of them both and Kouta would have a Brownlow if it wasnt for injury in the last couple of rounds.

1. Kouta
2. Carey
3. Hird
4. Buckley
5. Voss

Future No 1 Cousins hehe damn i hate been biased he will be very very good though.

Started off with a good post Walshy but you (Carey doesn't love his jumper) and some of the others here (soft**** Hird, cry cry cry, receiver type) "dumb it down" with inane arguments. Thanks to Shinners, Barney and Dutchy for your logical responses.

My 2 bobs; as far as I'm concerned Carey is still numero uno, Christ the guy was injured all through the finals because he'd carried them there, he's got a heart as big as Phar Lap, of which old Pagan exploits, but that's another story.

Don't get too carried away with his Norm Smith, great honour and all that but Christ Shanon Grant and Billy Duckworth have got one of those too.

It's right that Hirdy has the luxury of Lloyd getting the best backmen now, but none of them could handle him either, too big. He has been beaten though by players like Beaumont, Blakey (he used to own him), and Crawford.

Poor old Carey gets two guys on him quite often thanks to McKernans non-performances.

As Shinners said it's oranges and apples, regardless of Mikey's top 50, btw Hird will be number one with him he grades 'em on the now regardless of circumstance, onya Mikey.

The only reason Hird gets votes from the umps is because he never mouths off unlike Carey. They admit they don't give votes to mouthy blokes, same with Bradley.

Hey and forget bloody Kouta, lets see him put 2 good years together, not one here and there.

Cheers.

RED & BLACK BACK to BACK 2001!

The argument put forward was Carey vs Hird,
now we have the Essendon camp claiming Hird to be the best in the AFL.The players voted Kouta as their MVP, the King said Kouta was the best, and after I watched Kouta towel up Carey when we played Carlton..he is the best
by a long way.Its Kouta..Carey and then a gap
to Hird,Voss,Grant, Lloyd etc.I actually rate Lloyd better than Hird.. and wouldnt want a
guy who wouldnt donate a jumper for charity at my club...shows that he is money driven and has no character.
