A proven failure and reject from Melbourne who averaged under a goal a game and was delisted when they lack quality tall forwards. What a coup! Has no long-term future, will last 1 maybe 2 years ala Polak playing a few games but doing little. Would take a kid who has the possiblty to be a long-term player over him anyday. Especially in the 2nd round not "last pick in the RD" that a lot on here were pedalling as an excuse for picking him up.

What use is a strong body if he can't kick, has no pace and no football brain? A proven failure at not only 1 football club but 2.

We will see how he goes. Although considering Coburg's poor year where they didn't make the 8 and the fact that most Coburg players are trash, I was shocked when I saw at least 7-8 Coburg players training with us. Obviously some freebies going on there with the alignment.

So we picked one kid in the RD when we're rebuilding. Amazing when you consider It's produced many, many quality players over the years and nearly ever year without fail there's a fair few decent long-term players around the area we picked up Hislop and Miller. RD is gold if you use it to your advantage instead of picking up recycled hacks and should be used as such especially with all the GC/GWS concessions. Everything is now more important to get right. We decided not to continue to turn over and bring in new kids yet even the Premiers did. Do we have a better list than them?

Only "Hardly a disaster" if you want to look at it with your eyes closed and continue to blow smoke up Hardwick and co's behind no matter what they do.

I concur :thumbsu: What a terrible step backwards

He will never break into the senior side absolute waste of a pick! why not take 2 kids then Miller wtf is this shit? Poor recruiting AGAIN! WTF are they thinking? shitlop? LMAO

It seems like many of our speculative picks were for the Main Draft - and we went for low upside but 'safe' picks in the Rookie draft. Surely that's backwards as far as strategy goes.

Surely the rookie draft is where you take the punt on guys like :
Bock, Cox, Foley, Lockyer, Milne, Dean Rioli, Quyten Lynch, Ben Rutten, Nick Maxwell and the list goes on.

Our whole drafting is somewhat perplexing this year.

There are many positives
Conca, Grigg and Houli could be consistent 1st teamers. Conca in particular could be an A grader by the early looks. Batchelor looks interesting as well. The others in the main draft seem very speculative....

Have we improved our team? Yes - definatley, from a skills and a depth perspective. We didn't draft one single tall defender though - and that to my mind is our most glaring weakness. Hmmmm....

Perplexed...but not angry! A very different feeling to last years draft where we did exceptionally well.

Francis Jackson Quote

With Tommy [Hislop], the coach loves him - perhaps they are very similar."

That's why, I don't get it

Francis Jackson, Tigers recruitment manager:

"With Tommy [Hislop], the coach loves him - perhaps they are very similar."

That is why they recruited him. Hardwick sees something in the guy. I am pretty sure Hardwick would know more about Hislop's potential than anyone else here. So, give him a break and see what he can do in his second chance.

Why has this thread suddenly exploded today? Wasn't it made clear when tommy was moved off the senior list that this was going to happen?

"I almost fell off my chair when Sloppy's name came up" - Really? Guess you've ignored all club news since the draft?

End of the day, maybe the club just didn't rate anyone left, hence we took the Coburg boy at 1, used 2 picks on Sloppy and Miller and gave the three remaining kids we think ahve a minute chance of making it a shot at a pre season and a chance to earn their way onto the list.

I swear some people just want to complain for the sake of it.

I agree that we should have picked up a kid over Hislop, but thats no reason to start bagging out recruiting department and start talking about backward steps. For all we know Hislop may train the house down week in week out, may have the mongrel that we need, Im sure there is a reson we are giving him another crack.
I 1st thought why him over someone like Sewell, but then again no one touched Sewell at all!! And other teams recycled their played aswell, the depth may not have been great at all.
In saying that, I do agree that it would have been worth to take a punt on someone new, but whats done is done and we will continue to improve as a team!!
At the end of the day, the roolie draft can be awesome in finding players but it is at the end of the day the rookie draft!! We used our PSD well and that the main thing. Plus I am a fan of the Miller pick up. It is clearly to protect the young forwards and fill in for Jack if he goes down. This was smart thinking, as they have clearly said he will not play 22 games. Although I would have picked him up in the 4th round.
Lets get behind the Tigers and loose the neg comments!!

Seriously if people think his kicking will improve to an adequate level then they are kidding themselves. Hislop makes Jake King look like he's got pin point accuracy.

Stupid call picking him to say the least.

I could've told you the decision to keep Hislop on the list was a coaching dept decision, as opposed to a recruiting decision. Pretty sure the recruiters would have advised on the options, and with a lack of any quality choices, they likely decided to go with the devil they knew.

The thing is, as much (or little) as most on here have seen of Hislop, the recruiters have likely seen the same amount of those left in the RD at that point. And as much as we may think Hislop is a spud, with their knowledge of the players left, they may well know that those players left are even bigger spuds.

I would assume the only reason Hislop was not on the list proper was due to the injury he incurred last year. As far as I am concerned, he is in the same boat as probably half a dozen other players, except due to his injury he is in a position where he has to be rookie listed. He may well be promoted to the senior list before the season starts.

But in the end, who really knows. As much as people on here think they know, in general, they pretty much don't. But as we all know, opinions are like arseholes, everybody has one. And for that matter, everyone is entitled to one.

meh, im not too worried about our drafting effort this year, even rookie listing Hislop. A lot of the cream has already been gouged out of the pool by the expansion clubs and the recruiters are just working with what's left. Given the additional investments made into the recruiting dept. im willing to go along with decisions like these for the time being

Cutty I agree with what you are saying.

Because the coach likes him is enough, I just don't understand why he likes him. They have been hell bent in the last 2 drafts getting quality disposal!

WTF?

The bloke has shown himself to be utterly ordinary, an absolutely shocking kick, a poor finder of the ball and likes only to get in dust-ups to attempt to a semblance of worth.

Had a bad leg injury last year and was on the gas a day later. Now, we rookie him?

Better to admit a mistake than compound it. This selection is just nuts.

Please feel free to bump when he collects his second Brownlow, but if we ever need to promote him, due to injuries or those above him being more rubbish than this bloke, then heaven help us.

I can comprehend the logic behind Miller, but Hislop is unfathomable... that there was no worthwhile young-uns around at that pick is something I cannot accept.

Spot on. Why this spud has been rookied beggars belief. Has nothing to offer whatsoever at AFL level. Would have preferred an untried kid than this bloke. Lots of good players have come through the rookie draft. Hislop aint one of em. :thumbsd:

From Hardwick

Tom Hislop
“Tom has had his share of injury problems over the past year, and that’s prevented him from getting a fair crack at it. He had surgery late in the season to give himself the best possible chance of playing good football in 2011. We feel a fit Tom Hislop has a fair bit to offer us, due to his strength, aggression and versatility.”

...wonder if he had a groin (osteo pubis) injury that affected his fitness and kicking?!?.....

Someone beat you to it RFCO :)

And I can see where Dimma's comimg from.. ATM we lack a bit of 'mongrel', an enforcer if you like, someone who's not afraid of putting their body on the line and physically taking on the opposition.

Perhaps it's all about adding some balance to our young, developing list.. ? :footy:

I'm not in favour of Hislop being re-drafted so I will make that clear.
But I won't be losing sleep over it.
Re-drafting him as a rookie is not going to make or break us as a club.
Perspective is good sometimes.

I must admit, I nearly fell off the chair when Sloppy's name came up on AFL.Com!

:thumbsu:AND you’d be a d***head!!

Can only imagine how hard you laughed when you heard the names Slattery and Neagle called out.

Now there’s a couple of handy types who’ll take Essendon places!!!

:)

Okay after a few beers I have accepted the shitlop thing, If he can get his kicking and decision making better then I'll be happy :thumbsu:

Gold Coast hijacked all the best 17 year olds in the country last year. They dominated the National Draft this year and were included in the PSD and Rookie Draft. GWS had the first 1/2 dozen players in the Rookie Draft. Add the other current 16 clubs having their usual picks and people here are genuinely surprised Hardwick took Hislop. The next best 17 year old in the country is clearly way way off.
Hence why Geelong took a Kilsyth Basketballer(Bathie), Essendon a country ruckman (Jenkins), Melb took a retired Hawk (Campbell). Adel took a midget who's trialled at 4 clubs in 6 years (Callinan) and Collingwood took another skinny irishman (Cribbin).

Oh, tigers-what are you doing?

Hislop? Miller?

Hislop has to be the worst kick in the AFL. How bad is his balldrop? I thought your club was only going after guys that can kick? What a disaster! What are they thinking?

Surely there are some young players worth taking a punt rather than Tommy" I kick it anywhere and give away sturpid free kicks" Hislop.

He is a proven failure-unlike an 18 kid who might be ok
