You make some excellent points.Gold Coast hijacked all the best 17 year olds in the country last year. They dominated the National Draft this year and were included in the PSD and Rookie Draft. GWS had the first 1/2 dozen players in the Rookie Draft. Add the other current 16 clubs having their usual picks and people here are genuinely surprised Hardwick took Hislop. The next best 17 year old in the country is clearly way way off.
Hence why Geelong took a Kilsyth Basketballer(Bathie), Essendon a country ruckman (Jenkins), Melb took a retired Hawk (Campbell). Adel took a midget who's trialled at 4 clubs in 6 years (Callinan) and Collingwood took another skinny irishman (Cribbin).

Not a fan of the move but considering that the players picked after Hislop in the rookie draft had been overlooked by every other club in the previous 120 odd selections through the National/PSD/Rookie drafts suggests to me that Hislop was better than what was available.
Now if a kid or a couple of kids picked after Hislop go on to play 300 games and win multiple flags and the odd Brownlow and Hislop fails then we have something to be upset about, but right now the odds of those kids reaching that level is about the same as us winning the flag in 2011, i.e. not bloody likely.
As for Hislop himself, now that he is back on the list I'm quite happy to give him a crack if his form and fitness warrant it. If not what have we lost, not much really, but if he comes off we've gained a player. Seems like a no lose situation to me.
WAS commenting today at work to someone that after seeing Gold Coast have the first eight selections in the rookie draft that they seem to have about 72 players on theirlist.
They had a phenomenol amount of picks ... put simply the cupboard was dry.
I rate Hislop higher than others ... I'd be intrigued to see what he can do with an extended run without injury. Clearly Hardwick rates him .... that's enough of an endorsement for mine.
I keep repeating it ... we haven't made too many bad calls to this point in the past two drafts!
How bad is his balldrop?
Soooo.... I take it you won't be taking Hislop with pick 1 in the Buddy Draft?
Grrr![]()

He will never break into the senior side absolute waste of a pick! why not take 2 kids then Miller wtf is this shit? Poor recruiting AGAIN! WTF are they thinking? shitlop? LMAO
Hislop has shown enough and is a back up. Depth player. The question is do we need depth players at the moment??? should we have used the pick on a kid.... probably should have at this stage of our lists development. A project ruckman would have been a good choice IMO.
Hislop does offer us a utility type player. Was trailed up forward in the last pre-season and looked ok overhead and was always going in hard. Is a small improvement on King if fit.
Interesting decision but by no means such a bad decision people are making out to be on here.
I could've told you the decision to keep Hislop on the list was a coaching dept decision, as opposed to a recruiting decision. Pretty sure the recruiters would have advised on the options, and with a lack of any quality choices, they likely decided to go with the devil they knew.
The thing is, as much (or little) as most on here have seen of Hislop, the recruiters have likely seen the same amount of those left in the RD at that point. And as much as we may think Hislop is a spud, with their knowledge of the players left, they may well know that those players left are even bigger spuds.
I would assume the only reason Hislop was not on the list proper was due to the injury he incurred last year. As far as I am concerned, he is in the same boat as probably half a dozen other players, except due to his injury he is in a position where he has to be rookie listed. He may well be promoted to the senior list before the season starts.
But in the end, who really knows. As much as people on here think they know, in general, they pretty much don't. But as we all know, opinions are like arseholes, everybody has one. And for that matter, everyone is entitled to one.
Well Champ - at least his balls have dropped!
I'm leaning to the view that it would be irresponsible to NOT have someone a little hard given the number of undersized puppies we have.
Sewell got passed on by 16 other clubs, surely that is enough reason there to see why we didn't rookie him.
i think people are seriously overestimating the depth of the errr, rookie draft...anyone note that GWS only took 6 of their 9, what does that tellya...I figure that what remains are little more skidmarks on the bowl. tommy is a darn site better than that...close the damn thread it's a D I S G R A C E ...he's a fine young fella
Play him against collingwood and play him and king on didak which should make an interesting afternoon.

Okay after a few beers I have accepted the shitlop thing, If he can get his kicking and decision making better then I'll be happy![]()
