RICHMOND recruit Tom Hislop says he is hoping to turn over a new leaf after being abruptly delisted by Essendon.

Hislop was cut from the Bombers just two years after being drafted at pick 20 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft and admits he had discipline problems during his time at Windy Hill.

“I’ll probably make smarter decisions off the field. When I first came over I had a few little hiccups but I’ve learnt from those lessons and I’m looking forward to my time at Richmond,” he said.

“I think I’m pretty professional but there were a few little things that happened. I know that I’ve changed and I’m ready to make a name for myself at Richmond.

Hislop said he hoped to play a midfield role with the Tigers, citing his ball-winning ability as his major strength.

“I haven’t spoken about that too much with Terry yet but he said they need another inside midfielder and I’ve played there my whole career. I’m looking to get it inside and give it out to our quicker outside players,” he said

Interesting to see if he can change his attitude. I hope he does - he sounds like a good young player and fits our need for an inside mid perfectly.

“Everyone at the club’s been great; they said they’re going to judge me on what I do from day one here. It’s great to have the head coach behind me,” he said.

Says alot I think about his experience at the Bombers.

Seems genuine in his responses and I hope he can prove to be a good player for us. He'd be a real help playing against bigger bodied teams like Sydney, Geelong and North

Standard issue blurb associated with recruits given a lifeline.....we wait and see what unfolds. Right now the high makes everything feel good, pressure etc over a season does have ways of putting players to the test. I hope he repays the faith. ;)

Standard media issue 'repentant' spiel from shunned player.

Hislop needs to take full responsibility for his failure at Windy Hill, that article suggests to me he still has yet to do this.

Will be interesting to see what unfolds with this bloke

i thought it just sounded like someone who is grateful to have a clean slate and not be judged on what he did at his former club.

If he does what he says he's gonna do he'll be a real assett.

It's great that the club has put some faith in his abilities and his desire to make a real go of it next season. He's a player I'd like to keep an eye on and see what he brings to the group.

I'm sure he is grateful. Otherwise he might be plying his trade in the backwoods somewhere as a nobody. The point is talk is cheap and hopefully he lets his performance do the 'talking';)

Sounds like he's genuinely grateful and it aslso sounds like he didn't see eye to eye with Knighter.

With both Terry and Sheeds at Punt Road (plus Campo, Kingy etc) hopefully he'll have enough support available to make life easier for him.

If we can develop this kid properly we'll get a gem :thumbsu:

I'm firmly behind Hislop, if he turns it around he'll be the player we've been missing for a long time, the enforcer at the stoppages. We're too often pushed around, we need that bloke that demands peripheral attention at every stoppage. Simply put if he gets his shit together we're that much closer to a premiership calibre midfield. I'm willing to give him a clean slate to work with.

I'll bet Clayton Collard said the same thing when we picked him up after Fremantle dumped him. We'll just have to wait and see...

True... although at least Hislop looks like he has been laying off the dougnuts... lol.

Was/is he on 2 strikes?

Someone who gave me some info on him said it was unlikely he had 1 strike, so it's then doubtful he'd have 2 I guess. You can never know these things though, but best to assume it wasn't since there's been no rumours about drugs at all with Tom and he deserves a clean slate with whatever problems he had at Essendon :thumbsu:

Im going to wait and see, they always seem to pick up some recycle clogger they dont need like last year using a good draft pick in the process.

i think he could become a very handy player for us.if he put what ever happend behind him, and just starts new and improves with every game i think he will be the bargin of the draft
