Is there a group (formally organised or not) which people can join
to pursue their interest in research, statistics and history of
Australian Football? If not, would you join one?
I'd like to hear from you.

Areas of interest might include biographical registers of our local
competitions.

Bibliography of Australian Football. A very worthy project considering the plethora of published material in the last decade or so.

Properly researched collections of records: e.g. best & fairest medal winners, goalkicking tallies, claims for long kicks, highest scores.

Cheers

I am a mad keen footy fan with a very long and retentive memory but I do not wish to join a group or committee as I simply do not have the time to get involved. However I may from time to time be able to answer some questions you may ask. I do not know everything of course but I think I do know lots, so please give me a try. If I fail ten times then I will not challenge you again.

ditto the Old Fashioned Supporter there

I would love to get involved in some sort of capacity and contribute when and where I am able, but don't ask me to organize anything - I don't have the time and also access BigFooty when at work so don't get the opportunities to contribute that others might have ...

cheers

I would as well but not sure I could be bothered putting in the effort. I've got a long way to go before I know what most people know about this sport, being the glaring neophyte I am.

I'm a bit of history buff and stat freak in most sports that I follow. How many Americans do you know who got bored one night and made a list on his computer of every premiership winner?

Thanks for the encouraging responses so far.

I'm a member of the ACS & H (Association of Cricket Statisticians & Historians) and really enjoy the publications put out by them, including a quarterly journal.

While it would be nice to meet as a footy group on a regular basis, I think the distances involved would prevent this for more than a core membership. However, a newsletter (which may later grow into a regular journal) was more what I was thinking about when first posing the question.

As a taster of the sort of question that can arise from a non-VFL/AFL records list:

What do Laurie Nash (South Melbourne), Barry Lawrence (St Kilda) and John Burns (North Melbourne) have in common?

Cheers

To Croucher:

Maybe these three players all played for Tasmania or at least came from Tasmania. Apart from that maybe they all wore size 12 boots or size 36 jockstraps or all wore glasses or all are still alive. The question is wide open and my mind boggles as to what could be so common to all. I await the answer with deeply held breath.

I'd certainly be happy being a Brisbane "correspondent" for our local stuff. I've been putting stuff together for a while now .... and I can tell you that it is nothing short of a prick of a job! Noone- including the AFLQ - seems to have done it before, so I started out of love :)

I am somewhat of a "total" footy history buff .... I'm actually nearing the end of writing a book on the history of rugby league in Brisbane, and am keen to also do one on Australian Football since its been played up here for so damn long!

Anyway, that's what I reckon ........

Great to have such interest expressed. It will be important to have contacts and contributors in each region so the offers made are appreciated.

I'll post further thoughts later and leave you with the answer to the question posed yesterday.

Nash (1931 & 1932), Lawrence (1966) and Burns (1969) are among the players to have won the NTFA Best & Fairest award prior to starting their VFL careers.

and OFS...Nashy was such a legend he'd probably claim to have a size 36 jockstrap too!

The Croucher

To Croucher:

When I wrote that they may have had Size 36 jockstraps of course I meant Size 36inch waist, not length!

I have a memory bank of some interesting stats and which I often throw around in pub chats with fellow footy fans. Try these for starters:

Which club holds the record for the lowest ever score in VFL / AFL history ?

Which club holds the record for the second lowest ever score in VFL / AFL history ?

Which club holds the record for the third lowest ever score in VFL / AFL history ?

Which club holds the record for the fourth lowest ever score in VFL / AFL history ?

I will keep these going as long as you like them. If no response I will just vanish into oblivion from this topic.

I used to work with a group of AFL historians, but i finished up about a year ago. I thought i had a fairly extensive knowledge on football history, but these guys a freaks.

It was a very interesting experience, where i was able to expand my knowledge. I think it would be good if Bluey started a history board on BigFooty where we could all talk about past happenings, etc,. and share our knowledge no history.

BTW, heres the answer to your questions OFS:

St Kilda 2 v South Melbourne
Melbourne 2 v Fitzroy
St Kilda 3 v Essendon
South Melbourne 5 v Carlton

Thank you for your attempt to answer my trivia question, you were half right. I will wait a couple of days to see if any other contributors can answer the whole four correctly, but a clue is that the first one was wrong and one of the others was absolutely wrong.

To OFS

are these the answers you were after?:

St Kilda 1 v Geelong 1899

St Kilda 2 v Sth Melb 1897

Melbourne 2 v Fitzroy 1899

St Kilda 2 v Geelong 1899

St Kilda 3 v Sth Melb 1897

St Kilda 3 v Essendon 1897

Sth Melb 5 v Carlton 1899

To all:

These were posted on a website which I've just come across in the last few days. Some of you probably knew about it already. What an extraordinary amount of work it must have taken - all quarter-by-quarter scores of VFL/AFL matches 1897 to 2000 at: http://cromulent.freehosting.net/afl/afl_index.html#pixies

Damn, I am hopeless at history and all that, but I would be interested in such a group, for sure.

My footy knowledge is pretty much from 1990, so yeah, I am interested in learning more about players I hear so much about but never saw.

OldFashionedSupporter could I be so bold as to ask who you follow?

Maybe it might be worthwhile if you register, including your team in the location field.

To Croucher and WCE2000

Here are the answers to my trivia questions:

St Kilda, 1 point, vs Geelong, 1899.

St Kilda, 2 points, vs South Melbourne, 1897.
St Kilda, 2 points, vs Geelong, 1899.
Melbourne, 2 points, vs Fitzroy, 1899.

St Kilda, 3 points, vs South Melbourne, 1897.
St Kilda, 3 points, vs Essendon, 1897.

St Kilda, 4 points, vs Melbourne, 1903.

South Melbourne, 5 points, vs Carlton, 1899.

St Kilda, 6 points, vs Collingwood, 1899.

Also, St Kilda hold the most wooden spoons, hold the record for the most games lost in succession (48), they have won one flag in 104 years and therefore have the worst premiership rate of all the clubs. And did you know that when Fred Fanning kicked a records 18 goals it was against St Kilda ?

I will think up a couple more trivia questions soon.

To CJH - I do not wish to supply my team on this web site as I wish to remain neutral. At 79 years of age I have seen a lot of football, cricket, wars and other stress. I enjoy writing under no name but I appreciate your offer to name my team but I politely refuse to do so. One thing that annoys me though is supporters who "can" other clubs when their own clubs are really not much better. I find geelong4eva quite repugnant, and perhaps you could invite that person to supply his real name. But like most writers of his type he would not have the guts to do so. Perhaps that is also why he barracks for Geelong in the first place.

Yeh, pretty well on the ball with your answers to the lowest scores questions.

Cannot find any ref. to St Kilda ever kicking 4 points, especially against Melb. in 1903. Wonder what your source is for that info.? Also, think the 6 points v Collingwood match was in 1898 not 1899.

A general question to you as a supporter:
Did you have the chance or inclination to attend many interstate games - e.g. the 1958 ANFC Carnival. Perhaps you saw greats like Farmer & Cable before they played VFL? Any comments?

By the way, if anyone wants to get in touch with me directly through the profile button, I'd be glad to hear from them. The history group posts have also been getting a good response on the Regional Board as well as this one.
