They were pretty loose back then, another thing that surprised and amused me at Ephesus was the open air public toilets.
Guys would just sit and chat with each other while taking a dump, no such thing as cubicles back then.
You could never imagine doing that now.

I remember entering, and backing out of hastily, a public toilet in a fairly hicksville location which was basically a 30cm deep tiled trench running the length of the room, kind of a urinal for shitting. You squatted over the gutter with nothing separating you from your neighbor, and every so often water would flush along the gutter washing away the entire rooms contributions. If my memory serves me correctly there were a couple of old men taking a dump next to each other and playing cards.
On Rome, I think they influenced our culture a lot more than people realise, to the point where a lot of the western ways of thinking, distinguishing right and wrong and relating to people are inherently roman.
If you read any of Cicero's letters you get the feeling that language difficulties excepted you could have him and Atticus out for a few vinos or a pub lunch and get along fine and have plenty to talk about, which is pretty amazing when you think of the gulf of time and culture between then and now.
