I have a bunch of stuff in my house I don't use/need/want, but I'm also against the idea of just throwing stuff away for convenience. We live in such a wasteful society, I like to make sure if things can be put to good use that they are.

When I was a kid stuff like sports equipment, bikes etc. was regularly passed down then as you outgrew it you would pass it down to the next sibling/relative/friend etc. People don't seem to do that as much these days. It's either 'hang on to everything because it's so cute nawww' or 'buy new, throw away, buy new, throw awy etc.'.

A family member passed away and they were a hoarder. We had to clean the house before reselling...wowee what a job that was

But geeze I would just prefer to light the whole house up and burn it down. Start again. How many (im gonna assume) weeks did it take to clean the house?

We live 50 mins away and had to drive there 3-4 days a week. It took 6 weeks to totally clear the house for sale.

The other family members didn't help us, cherry picked stuff when we were not they're and called us thieves. The quickest way to lose family...over money and shit

Our place still has lots of the stuff from her place so we are now the hoarders

I cannot believe how easily a bit of money in a will makes family fall out. Our next door neighbour used to look after her elderly mother constantly, so when she died she got a special ring and a little more money in the will to make up for it.

Her sister, who was married to a guy interstate and absolutely rolling in cash, hasn't spoken to her since - nor did she attend her husband's funeral.

Our greedy family cleaned up...considering they were lucky to even be on the will.

Wife came from a family of poor farmers. As a result, they threw away NOTHING. Over time, the family finances improved, but the habit stuck. I remember the first time I went to one of the sheds - 2 or 3 dead fridges/freezers, every toaster they've ever owned (all dead), THE BOX from every toaster they ever owned, those tins you get the fancy Christmas biscuits in? - about 10 of those, broken chairs, busted fans, electric kettles, all the old kids books, old wall calendars. Total value - about 40c.

The wife has the habit a bit - we have enough plastic/Tupperware-type crap to supply the Aus Army. I try to do my bit - I used to be bad with books, but had a clean-out, and limit myself to 2 bookshelves. Now, when I buy a book, I get rid of one (Salvos). I try to follow that in everything - ie, if I need new shoes, it's because the ones I have have died - so buy a pair, throw out a pair. Buy a shirt, throw out a shirt.

Anti hoarder here. Anything which is not immediately useful gets turfed. Anything which is valuable is stored in a bank account.

I'm right with ya, buddy. I despise too much clutter. I don't really buy much of anything. Food and booze of course. I love to read (actual physical books) so I pick up probably too many books, but I have a storage space for the non reference books. My DVD and CD collection doesn't suck, but it's not overwhelming either.. I replace clothing that wears out and that's about all.

I have cool stuff but I bought most everything I need a long time ago, and I bought quality long-lasting things in every category that will probably all outlive me. I love to cook and I play guitar. I spent an outrageous amount on high end cookware, cutlery, guitars, amplifiers, sound gear etc. I'm done and it will probably all be serviceable, if not pristine, when I'm rotting in the grave. It's sad to drive past a music store or a kitchen type place and not need to go in and look around, but at the same time it's kind of liberating to be done with it all. My paycheck just sort of goes into the bank and sits there other than for simple bills and perishable goods.

Strangely, like you, I still find things I need to throw out or give away. I don't know where it comes from.

That's the key right there. Buy quality, well manufactured items and you end up saving a bundle.

Anti hoarder right here. I hate clutter, I hate meaningless crap, I dont get attached to things, I easily throw things away as I can easily replace them if I ever need to. Too much stuff makes it harder to clean and looks messy. I love clean kitchen bench tops with nothing on them. I hate shelves and book cases unless they are really tidy, otherwise they're an eyesore. I admit I bin things of value without thought. If I want it gone I want it gone now. I can't be bothered waiting to sell or give them away.

I just moved house and it only took me 4 hours to pack up a whole house with the help of one other person (not including moving it onto the truck). When I was moving I was so happy to be an anti hoarder, when I was unpacking I was thinking gee I still have too much shit.

My sisters are hoarders, I grew up in a disorganized house. I guess that is what has pushed me in the opposite direction, I don't want to go back to that.

Every time I read new posts here, I feel compelled to have a clean out.

Emotionally, I think I've become a minimalist after being a hoarder for pretty much my whole life.

I've found myself regularly cleaning my computer and naming everything too. On another note, I updated my mac for the first time in months and my HD freed 6GB

I'm a bit of a hoarder, not to crazy extents but often have trouble throwing things away that i'm even semi attached to. Pretty much a digital hoarder too. If i download a song or movie, even if it's shit i'll keep it forever. Just in case.

I was watching the UK version of Hoarders, one guy was so bad he wouldn't even flush his toilet paper He lived in a council flat and they would have to come in and clean his house every now and then.

Definitely a mental condition for some.

This ****ing thread. I'm sitting here packing up my life and reorganising years of filth and unfinished jobs because of this. The more I read about hoarding and think about hoarding, the more I'm driven to thrown everything non-essential out. I've just spent half an hour testing every pen I can get my hands on to see whether it should be thrown out or stay. Everything must ****ing go. If you don't hear from me, I'll be rocking back and forth in my minimalist haven. Until Uni starts anyway - maybe I'm just bored?
