There's a 'homeless' girl that begs near the IGA on Hay Street in Perth now near the courts. I noticed she has a face full of piercings too, therefore I think she's up to shenanigans.

Maybe the reason she is homeless is because she has a face full of piercings.

Of course you do, muttweed.

2 that I can remember from when I was in Melbourne....

1. Walking back to my hotel along Elizabeth street one night with a pizza - guy comes up to me "Oh man, can I have a slice?".... "ah, ummm... ah **** it here ya go".... give him the slice....then... "Oi hey man, can I have 2 more for my mates and do you have any money?".... "Pffffffffffft see ya!"

2. Sitting with my Auntie and young cousins at the McDonalds near the Melbourne markets.... We had just finished having a coffee, guy comes up "skuse me lady can I borrow $2 so I can get a thickshake?"... my auntie "Um, no but come inside with me and I'll buy one for you"... bum: "Get ****ed lady!" and storms off to the next table...

that guy wasnt after a thickshake. :thumbsd:

After that I just walk past them and say "Im broke"

Hahahahhaa I cracked up laughing at that bit:p:thumbsu:

The best defense is a good offense. If you see them approaching you, before they can get a word out, say "hey mate can you spare a couple bucks?"

Give em nothing & take em nowhere.

When in Asia, I've had a lot come up to me & have brushed them off.
I say to them I don't understand why you have no money, when I have no money I just go to the ATM & get more out.
If they understand me they don't like it much, but who cares bludgeing *****.

Bro can any of youse lend me ten bucks or so to get me through a rough patch.

Just pm where to pick it up form and I'll be right there.

You know you're not needy when you can afford a computer, Internet connection and a BF membership.

If someone I don't know asks me for a cigarette or money I will literally tell them to **** off. I think I have the right to walk down a city street without being accosted by some ****ing derro. Hank Williams sang ' mind your business cos I'll sure be minding mine' I've never asked anyone for anything and I think it's nothing but rude for someone to step in front of me and invade my space.

If I'm at a pub and you ask me for a cigarette I'll tell you to **** off. Mind your own damn business. If you can't manage to scrounge up $15 maybe you shouldn't have so many ****ing bad habits.

What cramdogs said basically, it also depends on the manner in which they do it, I mean if they are pestering me there is no way I will give them anything, although I do give money to the various buskers around the city, because I am a musician myself, and I am a sucker for those kinds of people... Unless they are god awful of course :p

Buskers do not apply to above rant. At least they are working for their money and not just expecting money to be handed to them.

Okay, centrelink is not part of what I know, but for the life of me why do these hobos exist?

Can they not get unemployment benefits? or disability? or do they chose to live outside of society relying on charity?

Yeah I am not up to speed with the whole benefits thing or centrelink etc. but in Australia I think we are given more than enough chances to do something if we really want to.

Just sign up with a job agency and tell them you are happy to do any job - if only to get a few dollars and have some pride.

My thoughts anyway....

Could be a range of reasons but typically there'll be mental health issues. Or the facilities they have available to keep them off the streets are more dangerous than the streets themselves.

Regardless, I don't give beggars money anymore. There's a heap of reasons but the main one is the money doesn't do any good. There were some kids that used to beg in Perth but they "worked" for a man who used to take the money from them.

The Big Issue is an exception. I'll buy that and if I've got any spare cash will typically give it to the vendor.

The gypsy beggars in Europe do my head in. The scam I witnessed most was of them pretending to collect donations for a deaf and dumb society by making grunting sounds and touching their mouths and ears. If you're stupid enough to engage and don't stay alert then you'll get pick pocketed as well when you're looking at the clipboard. We saw one gang of them in Paris basically force their way into an RER station through the exits while other people were leaving and put one old guy on his arse in the process. Scum.

And since that Japanese student got stabbed in the neck and killed in Perth by a guy who was asking him for a light or spare change I typically keep my wits about me when approached. That happened at the city bus station, the equivalent of it happening at somewhere like Flinders St.

No address no benefits.

Usually I don't give anyone anything as I know a strong chance of drugs is involved.

There is however one woman probably in her 50s who is often located near Spencer and Collins in Melbourne and draws god damn awful drawings. She is clearly mentally ill and nor does she get in your face. I often see her using her collections for food and a drink. She may smoke ciggies I cant remember but at least i know a lot of her efforts go on on food so from time to time, particularly if it's hot or really cold I drop a couple of bucks in hear or there.

That bus station on Wellington St has been a dangerous neglected place for years though, something like that was well overdue. The gypsy kids on the tube in London used to do my head in when they came around with their piano accordian and :( expressions, not as bad as those little animals in Paris or Rome but not still a pain in the arse.

Hank Williams sang ' mind your business cos I'll sure be minding mine'

The way Hank was going towards the end of his life he may have ended up a beggar himself.
