after watching him for a while, it is clear that he is classy and has the leadership ability to lead hawthorn.

i think that wen they gave the leadership to richie it was because hodge was too young and needed more experience. now he has that, do you think it is time for him to take over at the end of the year?

Good point. However Vandenberg is doing very well this season and is a good leader, inspirational. His chase on Ablett and tackle to prevent a certain goal was a good example of this. Vandenberg hasn't done anything wrong this season, he's been in the best in the opening three games and he has really improved, I think he's enjoying his footy more and the leadership is more natural to him now where as last year he felt too much pressure from it.
There's no reason I don't see Richie as skipper even next year, it just depends which direction they want to take at the club.

Hodge and Mitchell have obvious leadership qualities and both are producing some telling footy this season and are both natural leaders. They are becoming smart footballers and don;t get sucked in as often which is a sign of maturity.

The leadership position is fine now at Hawthorn.

Good point Benny. Vanders really has stepped up as Captain this year.

Not only that gut busting run to stop GA but an inspirational long goal the next quarter plus his leadership in getting the team together at the breaks.

Maybe that walk on the water during the Commonwealth Games has rubbed off on him??

Hodge is a great player, but i do not want him to be captain.
Captaincy takes to much away from superstars. Hodge should concentrate on his footy, and mayeb captain for a couple of yrs near the end of his career. I dont want to even see sammy as captain. Give somebody in the same possition as Vandenberg captain again. Ladson maybe? means our stars will have more time to concentrate on footy

As good a captain as Hodge would make, I think that Richie is doing a great job. He didn't get sucked in by Carr in Round 1, which I think is a sign that he has grown into the role. His on-field leadership has come along in leaps and bounds and from all reports his leadership off the field is exceptional.

With Hodge and Mitchell in the wings, and Crawford providing a helping hand, the Hawks look set for years to come :)

As much as Luke is well qualified now to be captain, Rich is there before him and while the latter wants to keep it I cannot see him being replaced, certainly for as many seasons Vanders can maintain his present leadership style. He is popular amongst the players and Clarko likes him.

Tend to agree with u Matty. Mitchell's done all the right things, has good media exposure, not likely to commit the sins of a younger man like Hodge may do. Plenty of time for Hodgey.
has captain written all over him:thumbsu:

 Not sure bout that idea......

On sammy being captain........He should definitly be the next hawks captain but not until vandenberg has had his run of captaincy as i believe it has pushed him to become a better player.........

He used to be rough as guts getting in fights left, right and centre! Really struggled for a while on just playin good footy................

But he has proven to myself, and im sure many other Hawthorn loyals, that he can push this side to their extreme!:)

Hodge would then captain the Mighty Hawks after Mitchell.(IMO)

How can any of us, unless we know the players personally, suggest who should or shouldn't be leaders.
Leadership is not only about how you play the game but how you lead othe rpeople to play the game.
For all we know (I am not saying he is) Hodge may be an introvert? Who feels uncomfortable leading players....

I think Sammy Mitchell will the be next captain, maybe it's just me.. but I can see alot of Crawford in him..

However, I'm not sure if alot of people would agree with me on this one but Richie Vandenberg has really stepped up this year, and knows how to get the momentum going! Great captain IMO
