Scandal Hogan spotted on the smokes at music festival while suspended

While not specific to Hogan, because he is not the only player smoking, I do find the defending of elite athletes smoking strange. Paid big bucks to perform and they are jeopardizing that. Pendelbury actually copped flak from Matt Richardson and other sources for frowning on smoking. Pendles is probably the most consistent performer in the competition and it is little wonder why - his preparation matches his wage. Easy to see why Richo was such an up and down player.

Smoking is one of the biggest preventable causes of disease, but only in the case of a smoking *habit*. Part of my field is cardiorespiratory health, so whilst educating people on the dangers of smoking is important, it is equally important to not be dishonest in this education process. A 'social' smoker who may partake once in a while will not find themselves suffering deleterious health consequences.

His dad just died, he wouldn't be human if his mental state wasn't a touch fragile right now

You have the awareness and empathy of a frozen pea at times

Very generous with the 'at times' there.

Thought it was pretty hypocritical of Pendlebury considering he'd know about the off season habits of some of his teammates.

That's contentious. Other experts say differently.

Note that the departures of the rat pack occurred once Pendles became captain.

No, it really isn't. We know that smoking once every week-fortnight has no practical health effect. It's simply easier to flatline denounce the activity since many social smokers develop into habitual smokers.

Not that contentious really when they teach you that as first year med student.
Compared to being hermetically sealed in an oxygen chamber your entire life, it probably does have some deleterious effect on lung health, but compared to everyday exposure to an abundance of known airborne toxins the increase in damage is negligible.

Stupid professional Athletes, Did you know social smoking is harmful to your health?!?

Again, this fits in line with what we, as healthcare professionals, are told to tell people - "just stop". And, again, the risk is that many people who smoke casually eventually turn into full-time smokers which is what we want to avoid. So, in theory, what Hogan is doing is bad because he is increasing the likelihood of developing a smoking habit. However, I am taking it on face value as simply a social smoke at one event.

A similar example to "dumbing it down for the masses" is with dietary advice. The government could give people a thorough education on how people can determine their daily caloric needs for their goals, the breakdown of macronutrients and required amounts if micronutrients, as well as how to determine how healthy a particular dish is. However, they accept it's too difficult so make it extremely simple like "don't eat fried food or food with added sugars", or "eat natural things".
I see many people follow this simple advice and fall into the trap of eating unhealthy foods that they believe are healthy, or seeing people avoid foods that they perceive to be bad when they can easily be incorporated into a healthy diet. Still, though, just like how it's better than trying to explain how to smoke safely and have people fail, it's easier to give these blanket rules than have people too lazy to learn the intricacies or not capable of understanding them.

There hasn't been any studies on social smoking and the studies done on 1-4 smokes per day point to health problems. There are professionals of the opinion social smoking itself causes damage. Yes a lot of professionals may just take the approach of saying no smoking to make it a simpler message, but there are professionals out there who believe social smoking itself causes damage.

Might even have been even less. I remember an ad that said "join the Escort club. 34c and you're a member." That Escort ad would have been mid 60s to early 70s when TV was still in black and white.
I remember when Winfield first introduced the 25 pack in the late 70's they were 77 cents
