Hoggy's Williamstown Report

Went to the footy on sunday to watch the Gulls just get over the line against Springy (also had the pleasure of Mr Michael Malthouse and Mr Neil Balme sit next to me).

Here's my analysis of the Collingwood players playing.....

Richardson - Kicked 5 goals 3 behinds playing as a marking forward with a tiny bit of time in the ruck, then made the game saving tackle in the backline...HE'S BACK

Freeborn - Wasn't sighted much but looked composed with the ball, strangely wasn't on the ground in the last quarter when the game was up for grabs.

Betheras - Played a good game on the wing, probably in the best, 20 odd possessions my estimate.

Nixon - Looked good with the ball but didn't touch it much.

Richards - Not sure about this one, was used as the 2nd ruckman and got himself lost out there quite a bit. Went one-handed for a lot of marks and still looks like a stick.

McGough - Continued his good VFL form, probably about 20-25 possessions as well.

Kinnear - Looked good in the forward line and was producing a contest every time he went near the ball.

Scotland - BOG by a mile, at least 30 possessions and probably more and looked so far better than anyone else on the ground it was not funny.

Shackleton - He's fat, but he can play and play very nicely, great user of the ball, kicked a goal and is a good mark for someone his size.

C.Cloke - Big man, went alright in the ruck (against Barry Brooks, Chris Oliver and Trent Knobel). Probably drew even with them but had a much bigger influence than Richards.

Swan - Looked lively without doing much in the forward line.

Surely Scotland (to replace Johnston) and McG ( to replace hmmm not sure) have to come into the 1's

Mick kept asking me to look in my record...does that count...oh and I asked if Richo could get a promotion....he said "Who for?"...I had no comeback.

Correct, he was on the cripple. But field errors that result in goals are still his responsibility. Thankfully Riewoldt has nobody at the club to show him how to, and when to, lead .

BTW, the problem of teams scoring many goals quickly against us hasn't gone away.

Hang on you're not blaming him for the pass from Lokan that was smothered and resulted in Riewoldt goaling? That's a bit harsh.

Certainly Cloke is a poor primary defender-if his man is the leading focal point he is easily beaten for pace. However he is a gun at controlling "third man in" specialists like Jonathon Brown and Hamill. He supresses their "presence" ie they're too worried about him to belt some unsuspecting Magpie.

He also has excellent judgement for spoiling and ruck plays and he deals out plenty of biffs himself (he's a bit of a "third man in" specialist too). He adds more than he detracts from our defence and is worth his place, especially in the cold dark months ahead.

Too true. We have lost some of our spirited elasticity of last year. We haven't played for good quarters all year. Still we're playing poorly and we're 5-4, so hopefully we'll find some form and still be in touch with the 4. Boy do we need to beat Port.

Grant Thomas and co are complete tools for leaving the apparently injured Hamill on the ground for the whole 123 minutes. Surely they had room on their bench.
