There are very few sports in the world where if you make a successful pass (in this case a 15m kick) you are rewarded by the defender having to stop and give you time and space to make the next pass. Netball is the other one I can think of.
Given this massive advantage, when running the clock down with a minute or 2 left and a slender lead, how in the world is the best strategy to kick to a 50/50? And yet we did this at least twice in the last 2 minutes today. Surely professionals can hit a 20m pass, go back and have a look, and hit another 20m pass etc etc to wind the clock down?
Its why they invented a shot clock in basketball. Otherwise teams can just holds possession for a few minutes.
But there is no shot clock in footy. There's no rule against passing backwards(again, there's a back court rule in basketball). So you have 360 degrees, and an enormous field to make a 15m pass, and the best you can do is kick long to a 50/50.
Boggles the mind.
Using the netball example, imagine a netball team, up by 1 with a minute to go, with possession. Would they throw it long to a 50/50? Or would they try to make a successful pass after pass to wind the clock down? End rant
