Horribly overrated Nic Nat is. His best is amazing but is so damn rare its almost shocking. Would love to see Holmes leap above him and get that ball down without him even touching it.

Did you watch him tear us apart about a month ago?

On saying that about Naitanui, couldn't the bloke who this thread is about Holmes be also marketed the same way? I know we have a couple of good ruckmen already, so that's why I wouldn't mind seeing him learning another position to add another string to his bow. If given the chance & becomes successful could be very marketable.
This Is just my opinion and im sure plenty will disagree but I dont think Holmes will make it.
I think he might end up playing a few games but just be 'handy' at best.
But in saying that I would be extremely happy to be proven wrong :thumbsu:

Nic Nat is finally over his injuries that hes had for the last 2 years and hes ripping the game appart. Will be the best ruckman in the comp by daylight soon.
Holmes is tracking nicely 2 years ago hed never even seen a football. So for him to be doing what hes doing now is awsome. He knows what hes doing.. He knows if he just improves a little bit more he could be looking at a 6 figure 2-3 year contract either with us or another club and thats why hes working hard. Thats why hes here.. i think he could get there.. Good luck to him.

Honestly this is the most likely outcome. He does have a great leap and work rate but I don't think it's likely that Holmes will develop the understanding, skills and nuances of the game to make him a better option than guys who have been playing since they were kids. We'll probably see him play a few games, may even work his way up to being the preferred backup ruck if we end up trading Hickey or Longer, but Holmes playing more than a handful of games is a long shot. It's a shame we didn't sign him a couple of years earlier - next year will be his first real chance at senior selection and he'll already be 26-27. If he had 40 more games of footy behind him right now he'd be much closer.

With that said, he's developing at an awesome rate, if he can keep improving so much so fast then he may well make a career out of it. Although I certainly don't think all of Longer, Hickey and Holmes will still be at St Kilda in 3 years.

He got 35odd hitouts, some bullshit frees, 0 marks and a dozen disposals or so around the ground. Hardly tearing us apart there except in the ruck where he was certainly the better over Longer.

Im not saying that he cant be amazing, he has shown that, but its far and few between for me to really rate him. Get the consistency down and he likely will be one of the best in the business.

Anyone have any idea what international rookies are paid?

Really hope Holmes gets on a primary list and makes it. If at the Saints, it probably means a trade of B1 or B2, whom both have currency. Some pain given both made a commitment to come to us and have both shown promise of being elite ruckman in 3 years.

Though Nic Nat cannot read the play.....that is why he literally disappears when he is playing around the ground. He knows not when and where to run, and timing is a mystery to him. That is a big reason he takes so few marks despite his atheltic gifts.

In the ruck it is different. The umpire actually stops the game for the contest each time and so he is where the ball is at at last. He has quick reflexes and so at the ball-ups can often grab it and burst away as well as do the tapwork.

But then the ball goes insto space he is lost again, as he knows not when and where to go.

He will therefore remain a "highllight" player, a player of two ratings. Great at the ruck, and so-so around the ground.

Just cannot agree with anything you said here. Nic Nat's biggest problem is his endurance, and he will struggle with that aspect all his career. Just doesn't have the staying power to match it with the better runners. But if you engage him in a power based contest (jump/sprint) he is the best in the league by a country mile. His ability around the ruck makes him a very important part of the West Coast midfield. Verging on all Australian this year.

I know I've said it before about giving Holmes a run in the forward line & also the backline to help with his education. Seeing that the sub might get scrapped & it will revert back to 4 on the bench, now I'm wondering if maybe Longer & Hickey ( has played forward) also are tried out in these positions. That way if on the bench, in case of an emergency they can come on & fill these positions if needed, leaving 3 midfielders on the bench as well.

Fox Footy Prediction as to who might debut before the end of the season

http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl...but-at-your-club/story-e6frf3e3-1227452527740

ST KILDA

Jason Holmes

THE big American is still on the Saints’ rookie list, but his development has been dramatic. Billy Longer’s form is making a dream debut difficult, however Holmes looks the next big man in. He has outshone fellow ruck Tom Hickey when playing for Sandringham this season and recorded 60 hit-outs against Port Melbourne five games back. The 203cm prospect showed plenty when given a chance in the NAB Challenge.

Nic Nat No Not

Holmes definitely has a way to go reading play away from the ruck duals but he's getting so much quality from his tap work he might just make it regardless. The idea that there are a heap of multi dimensional rucks out there is crap anyway. Most are either good at contesting the ruck or better around the ground. Mike Pike made it from a pretty similar position so I will back him in. He has a great attitude and is really driven to learn and succeed. I have met the NZ guys and they are enjoying the adventure but seem like its a novel exercise. Jason is an extremely focussed guy and is working really hard. At the jumper presentation he and Paddy were first to arrive and they got around everyone there and is happy to chat to anyone who's interested. He's a fantastic off field asset and a good guy. He deserves to make it as he has determination like few other players.

Its time to upgrade Holmes from rookie list since JB is out for the entire 2015 season.
Don't think there's enough rounds left to qualify for a LTI unfortunately.
Richo said during his twitter Q&A just then that they expect Holmes to play seniors next year. Possible end of season upgrade?
Pierce downgraded, Holmes upgraded perhaps?
