No need to defend Craig, Stiffy.

None of us were criticizing him for it. It was excellent to watch, and as the normal mid-field coach, you would expect that Craig would have other options up his sleeve.

But it was very appropriate for today.

Spot on :)

As great a win as it was its was always going to be a good show. Next week against Sydney at the SCG is the test and we can draw more conclusions from that game than we can from this game.
1 game doesn't make a coach, but I'll take a win like that anytime! Bit of Russian roulette today, as there were so many loose players, which lead to a quick flowing attacking game. Great to watch, but that style won't work against all opposition.

Either way its an exciting style to watch.

It will be interesting to see how we play against Swans who do chip it around a fair bit and try to frustrate the opposition. I don't think it will be as free flowing game as it was today.

One match up I am really looking forward to is Leo Barry on Scott Welsh. I reckon that has ripper written all over it :D

Correct on the Swans. This is a far bigger test for the way that Craig handles the mid-field with Sydney working on blanketing the mid-field and using flooding tactics.

They are a very negative side that try to frustrate you by flooding and chipping and then catch you out on the rebound.

I wonder where they found Choco's discarded old game plan lying around. :p

That style of play has always been exciting to watch. High scoring and very attractive.

It did attract a lot of criticism in Cornes years, not unlike Neeshams style which has gradually been more accepted.

Leo Barry has improved out of sight and its a good matchup with Welsh.
Would like to see Watts put into a forward pocket as I think we'll need a tall up there on the SCG.

There's also a hint of rugby in there with the way they run in waves down the ground.

This game will be a very good test for Craig.

No arguments from me. Thats why I am looking forward to the Sydney game. I don't thin that style will work against Sydney. They like to blanket the midfielders and chip it around. Basically their philosophy is "if the opposition doesn't have the ball they can't hurt you".

This game will be a huge test for Craig as a coach and he would have to come up with the formula that will work against Sydney.

Melbourne allowed us to have 2 loose men for much of the day - which is great when you have control of the play. However, not all opposition coaches will allow that. Hopefully we have a plan B too when required.

All I can say is go Adelaide! Craig is your man.;)

Seriously though it appears the memebers really want him.Reminisent of the Roos when Eade was sacked.

You wouldn't be saying that because you want Wallace at the Tigers would you?? ;)

How about you appoint Craig for Richmond?? ;)

**** yeah!

:D

I thought it was interesting that Trigg said "it's his job to lose" So you have to glean from that he's the favourite.

You certainly played with a more free flowing style today.

Incidently we did too last night against Brisbane.

Seems you just need to sack a coach to get an improved performance;)

Yes......as distinct from the Gary Ayres game plan which was the same week in week out.

Beating Sydney in Sydney is no easy task. Hopefully Trent and Bodey will be Ok as both were very impressive before injury today.

Well after two wins in a row, I'm trying to find a copy the Dogs game to see how different we played compared to today, which was great!

Woohoo!

Great effort by all and sundry. It seems to me that everyone has underestimated our crop of youngsters (even myself).

Reilly was outstanding. Bock, Mattner, Skipworth all took another step forward and Trent looked like he was gonna' bag a 1/2 dozen before he toppled over. Would've liked to have seen Fergus get more gametime, but hey, what's the rush?

Great to see the AFC play down the corridor, with an open forward line and with smiles on their faces. Nice stuff.

9/10 for Craig's 1st exam, but the verdict is still well and truly out. It was fun yesterday, but like many of us have already said, let's not get carried away.

By the way, when was the last time a team with a 5-9 record had a percentage of 100%+ ??

Very very good win today and congrats to Craigy for really backing in his youngsters today, particualryl Rutten.

However, we will need to see how Neil reacts under pressure as today Melbourne were pretty ordinary.

We killed em in the one on ones today and only Brown showed anything from my perspective.

Skippy Bock Matner and Reilly were all terrific.

Nathan Bassett was great again with Rutten taking Neitx it left Bass to run amok.

Lets keep the lid on, but some very positive signs

AGain our forward line looked better without Carey and it was wide open for Welsh to lead into.

Get Burton down there to stay in the square and take hangers while Welshy leads and we will do well I think.

It'll be interesting to see what Craig does with Burton.

I hope he reads your thread and does exactly what you said!! :D

Is this your subliminal way of suggesting the caretaker-coach has only one goal in mind?

When watching Adelaide play over the last couple of years since Carey was there I got the impression the midfield focused too much on Carey and Ayres put him in a poor position.

In the end Carey became the go-to man and the rest of the forward line stagnated.

He should have been left as a wide playing forward pocket with Stevens leading towards the opposite pocekt where Welsh should be. That would give the midfield the option to kick it to Stevens on the lead if he is in space or if that option was not good to go to Carey for a one-on-one in the opposite pocket.

He should have been used sparringly as a pinch-hitter. The best defenders were playing on him and he was often double teamed, if the ball went to him 1/3 of the time or less it would have given other forwards far better opportunities to score.

At the end of the day, the Adelaide forward line under Ayres was congested, people were running into eachother's space and bringing their opponent to the contest making it difficult to take contest marks inside 50, that lead the midfield to chip it around because the forward line was in disarray.

The gameplan was much more fluent this week, the ball moved alot faster and there was more room for the key forward who did not get in eachothers way as much.

Sydney will be a huge test, when we played them we were killing them early but they go to the flood very quickly in games and it just chokes up the forward line and turns the game into an ugly slog. We ended up getting spanked because we couldn't take contested marks in a flooded forward line.

Good luck for this week, I hope you guys can pull off another win.

everyone seems to be expressing that the game plan yesterday was very similar to the old sanfl/cornes days. My family thought it was a bit more like the crows under blighty - and that style won two flags :D

Quote of the Game: this was said by a guy in the crowd just after a free was paid to Welshy in the third quarter for a fairly heavy tackle - "I'd take a morning after pill after a tackle like that!"

In my un-expert opinion it was more like Cornes' game plan because the kick to handball ratio was something like 1.32 which is really low.

Pagan's long kicking and direct teams usually have a ratio of anywhere from 1.75 to over 2.0.
