Hey guys,

I'm a Brisbane-based Tasmanian footy fan who's never been further west than Whyalla, but I'm compiling scores of the WAFL since it started...

The info I've got lists home grounds according to their sponsor's names (e.g. Subiaco is called Paterson's, and the rest together look more like the business pages than a list of WAFL club's home grounds)...I hate grouping them like this, partly tradition and partly because a new sponsor stuffs everything up...and because I know nothing about Perth's geography, a lot of it goes over my head...

So can anyone please tell me the home grounds of their clubs, using the traditional names and not the sponsors, as I try to sort out the statistical story of a grand footy comp...?

Subiaco Oval - Paterson's Stadium (WAFL GF's only, all finals used to be played here until a few years ago. Subiaco Oval was Subiaco's home ground for a century before they were forced to leave. Currently West Coast and Fremantle's home ground)
Leederville Oval - Medibank Stadium (Subiaco/East Perth)
Lathlain Park - Brownes Stadium (Perth)
Bassendean Oval - Steel Blue Oval (Swan Districts)
Rushton Park - Bendigo Bank Stadium (Peel Thunder)

East Fremantle Oval (East Fremantle), Fremantle Oval (South Fremantle), Claremont Oval (Claremont) and Arena Joondalup (West Perth) don't have sponsorship arrangements.

Swan Districts- Bassendean Oval
Perth- Lathlain Park
Claremont- Claremont Oval
South Fremanltle- Fremantle Oval
East Fremantle- East Fremantle Oval
Peel- Rushton Park
Subiaco- (formely at Subiaco Oval) now home ground is at Leederville Oval since 2004
East Perth- (formely at Perth Oval) now home ground is at Leederville Oval since 2000
West Perth- (formely at Leederville Oval) now home ground is at Arena Joondalup since 1994

Hope that helps you out.

Ljp86 for your information West Perth & East Perth have never shared Leederville Oval, East Perth's old home ground for over 100 years was Perth Oval (now Nib Stadium home of the Perth Glory soccer team)

East Perth had the WACA as their home ground in 1988 and 1989 IIRC. Can't remember the reasons for the shift from Perth Oval though.

Can't remember this occurring.

My memory ( bit hazy these days !!! ) says that East Perth moved straight from Perth Oval to Leederville.

Maybe it was Perth who has the WACA as a home ground in the late 80's ?, I know they played there in the 50's.

Nah, East Perth were definitely there for a couple of seasons. I don't think I missed an East Perth home game from 87 until 96, and I've got some good memories about our days at the WACA (except for remembering why they played there in the first place!!).

We were there for 1988 and 1989, with only Rd 14 in 1988 (v West Perth) being played at Perth Oval in that time.

We were back at Perth Oval for Rd 1, 1990, but still had some home games (all of them I think underlights) at the WACA in the years after this.

It was at the WACA in 1989 that Andrew 'Jock' Embry snapped his leg on the Prendiville Stand wing, and due to the lack of people there, we heard the crack of his leg all the way across in the Lillee-Marsh Stand. Still one of the worst things I've seen on a footy field and Jock (a family friend at the time) never played league footy again IIRC.

Being born in 1990 I missed pretty much all of the WAFL in its prime... but I just can't imagine Wellington Square being a WAFL standard footy oval!! Would love to hear some anecdotes about it!

Wellington Square, where did you hear that name ?.

No, AFL & WAFL has never played there.

I've read in a book somewhere that in the 19th century some early WAFL team played some games there.

East Fremantle used to share Fremantle Oval with first Fremantle and later South Fremantle, until they moved to East Fremantle Oval.

North Fremantle played games at what was then known as North Fremantle Oval. I'm not sure if this was the same ground where the current amateur North Fremantle side play.

Played a couple of games at North Freo in the 70s - believed it was North Freo (early WANFL) home.

Perth left the WACA when Lathlain Park was opened in 1959:

Of historical interest specific to WA ovals would be their original size, e.g Perth Oval (formerly Lotons Park I think), home of the Royals (East Perth Football Club) was 220 yards goal to goal in the 50s - I'll chase up the specs.
The removal of cricket pitches on the footy clubs home grounds happened in (maybe) the 60s - saw Subiaco Cricket Club move down to near the Shents, the Shenton Park Hotel, what was that ground called?
