We lack a bit of ..nt about us. We are to friendly and full of good Samaritans.
We don't look or come across as a group all together on a mission to win at all cost. There is no hard nose approach to how we go about our footy. Only Lycett has what I call the eye of the tiger, the rest I want to take to dinner with my Grandparents as I know they will be well behaved.
We have the ability I believe but we lack that real miserly ugly side you need to go all the way, this is why we struggle away and in big games. Other sides have the killer instinct and we just don't have it.

Fair call by all, it's still relatively early in the season so we'll see what happens. It does seem to me that the home ground advantage seems more prevalent this year (for all sides) than I can remember. Maybe the AFL is such an even competition these days that when one team is off a little (and a 3000km trip can knock you around a bit) then the other team is able to take full advantage.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Agree with a lot of this - what I wouldn't give for a Woosha type to put the fear of God into the opposition players, or a Ben Cousins type who led by example and pulled wins out of the bag (obviously without the baggage). If only!!

Perspective: The only team likely to make the 8 with the MCG as their home ground is the Hawks. So IF we make the Grand Final, we would likely be playing a team that hasn't played their much more than us this season.
Well that would be nice wouldn't it - hadn't thought of it like this so you have a point. Actually when comparing the Hawks to other sides they are well down on a lot if the stats including percentage but as we all know you can never write them off.

In all seriousness though, there haven't been any 'away' wins by any of the Top 8 teams against each other that have required travel have there (discounting Hawks' 3 point win against Doggies in R3)? It's pretty much going to script, winning away from home is harder than winning at home, particularly when playing quality opposition.

A top 2 side should be competitive though. We've only been competitive for a combined total of about 40 mins in our last 4 interstate matches.

Top 2 sides also shouldn't be smashed by 80+ points (Hawks) or scrape home against lesser sides (Sydney, Hawks). I'm not too worried :)

Hawks v GWS was a one off, not an ongoing issue.

And we will wait and see if we scrape home against lesser sides when we play them away from Perth later in the year.

Hawks scraped home when they played the saints at home , too
As did North against Melbourne
I'm not worried :)

Agreed, and fear not, my midweek glass-half-empty persona will emerge soon enough drowning me with all these facts, but I guess I was trying to look for something, if not positive, not so negative in our form line....ironically enough by looking at other top 8 sides' form. I agree, it hasn't been great and my initial feeling is that, like you I think, we're not good enough to take the cake this year. We just won't win where we need to win. Away. It's a tougher draw and we seem to be returning to old 'bang it on the boot and hope' habits going I50. Enter Josh Gibson, Ted Richards.. and probably Harry Taylor this weekend.

Apart from our 'away' issue, we look sluggish. The weekend was a step forward though, we moved the ball well in patches but it is hard to know because Collingwood's defence was a bit of a rabble at times. Redden is coming good. Jetta looked ok to me in the first half. LeCras getting his swagger back. One more game under Wellers and Easy's belt. Duggan took a step up. Some of our ball movement was sublime. Breathtaking even. Will we get that space? Will the boys execute those precise kicks/handpasses under the scrutinising, jeering, less than fawning fans of Symonds Stadium? How will they cope when they realise they aren't in Kansas anymore?

They were "home" matches but were played in Tasmania. As I said, we will see how things go when we play middling sides away from Subi Oval.
