Lonie wins Ansett Rising Star nomination

Monday, April 23, 2001

Ryan Lonie of Collingwood has won the Ansett AFL Rising Star nomination for Round four.

Lonie, 18, disposed of the ball 16 times and delivered it three times from defence on Friday night's match against Richmond. Having made a convincing start to the season during the Ansett Cup, Lonie has played all four home and away matches.

Drafted at No. 34 in the 2000 AFL National Draft, Lonie has shown himself to be a hard running, exciting, left-foot kick. Playing in the half-back he has regularly been sought out by his teammates to dispose of the ball.

A key player in the Victoria Metro team and a member of the AIS/AFL Academy, Lonie showed outstanding form last season with the Dandenong Stingrays.

Lonie's performance in Round four has confirmed his enormous potential, backed by his efforts in Round three against the Western Bulldogs, when he was also one of Collingwood's best players.

It has only taken four superb consistent rounds (more than we can say for Kerr & Harris) of footy for this star to be racognised. Oh, and he remains unbeaten to date. Talent!

Onya Abba. Keep running 'em ragged son!

Watched Daniel Harris a bit in the Geelong aquatic centre on Sunday and while he failed to get off a quality disposal at times (who didn't), he was very good at getting the ball on the ground in traffic. Very impressed so far. As for Lonie, well he plays for Collingwood. Couldn't torture me enough to admit I have time for one of them.

Meanwhile a ruckman who also got 16 possesions (for a 203cm guy not bad) and the most hit outs in the game and playing about 75% of it cant get nominated?

Playing in a game against such quality opposition, how on earth did he not get selected.

i agree that lonie has worked his butt off the last couple of rounds and deserves the nomination. i think that this was one of the toughest rounds to select a nominee because there was a kid for st.kilda on saturday night (i think he was no.44 - milne possibly??) and he did a better job than some of the st.kilda seniors. luke mcpharlin i believe would have also gone close.....pulling in around a dozen marks in the rain, killing his opponent, and creating play for the hawks was a pretty good effort......i'm just hoping that nathan lonie is as good as ryan......from what i've seen of nathan playing for box hill, he's a good sort like his brother.....hopefully it's a genetic thing........
