Strategy Hooker or Carlisle

Hooker back. Carlisle forward. Jake has shown incredible games forward (wbd game stand out to anyone?)

Hooker is one of the best roaming backs in the league
he is but has also shown shown his worth up forward, a good avenue for goal other than Daniher!
Castile has shown he has serious talent, but his bad games often outweigh his good games!. either way its a good dilemma to have, but for the time being im happy to see hooker up forward & castile down back.

before his move up forward Castile was stiff to miss out on an all australian defender spot

Agree. I reckon Carlisle could be a good CHF.
Roams well and presents well outside 50. I reckon he could very Carey-esque in that roll. I was against it up until the Hawks game, then i started to see something in him as a forward.
Hooker too good as a defender - and a great competitor - to play forward.
Hooker is always good for a laugh, always very animated when showing his emotions :D

To get the most out of our list, if Bellchambers and Carlisle are both actually fit (and still at the club) and one more preseason into JD then I'd like to see us start next year with the structure of:

Hurley, Hooker and Carlisle all down back. Carlisle is perfect for the resting ruck and Josh Kenedy types. Hurley can take Darling, Black, Buddy, Gunston ect ect. Hooker can take Cloke, Walker .. ect ect. Lets have a backline built around 3 KPDs capable of being AA.

Bellchambers on the ball.

Daniher up forward and McKernan assisting him while giving Bellchambers a chop out. The aerial ability of Edwards, Laverde and Langford will be enough. If Ambrose continues to improve he can add some hustle and bustle up there as well.

Carlisle showed he can be great when swung forward. Hurley can really provide some extreme contest plus some hustle around the half forward line. Hooker nearly outmarked two blokes on his own last night and was catching anything if he had the sit, no matter what Tarrant did. Hooker will be great to send to the forward goal square if we really need to roll the dice.

So lets have an impenetrable back line, a big ruckman with 3 genuine big bodied mids at his feet, a 2nd ruck who is also mobile for a big KPF, a 201cm mobile forward who loves to jump at the ball. Then pace and run to fill up the flanks and wings. It's not rocket surgery.

It's great our 3 KPDs are all capable of swinging forward. That makes us confident that we're always a chance in a game and the opposition nervous. It's great that we have some genuine speed and flair to look forward to next year as Edwards, Laverde, Fantasia and Langford all come on and Zaka and Colyer recover from injury.

We still need to build our side around:
  • Baguely and Hibberd lock down any little smart arse who thinks they're going to kick arsey goals or get the Joe the goose
  • KPDs that don't allow an opposition forward to tear us apart
  • A ruckman and inside mids that break even or win the stoppages
The rest is all icing and I think two tall forwards in Daniher and McKernan provides enough structure to let our young outside running, skillful and 190cm+ kids fine plenty of space to run into and opportunities to bag goals. I personally would like to see us play Ambrose in the midfield rotation and have him, Watson and Goddard rotating through one spot in the forward line.

Baguely Carlisle Hooker
Gleeson Hurley Hibberd
Stanton Watson Zaka
Laverde Daniher Langford
Goddard McKernan Edwards
Bellchambers Heppell Hocking
Myers Colyer Zerrett Ambrose

Backs Depth: Browne, Ashby, Gwilt
Mids Depth: Jerret, Howlett not sure if O'Brien and Kav will be here.
Forward Depth: Cooney, Fantasia can't be bothered doing more.

Fantastic post ^ but I think we can't afford to play all of Watson, Stanton, Myers, Hocking, Heppell and Goddard through the midfield in one game. I'd actually love to see Goddard go to a half back flank to replace Gleeson and add Jackson Merrett to the midfield/half forward mix (he has greatly impressed me the last fortnight). Gleeson needs to put on about 10 kg before i'd consider him a lock in the best 22. Great potential though, just needs to get his body right.

We MUST recruit a young KPF in the draft if possible or manage to steal one from another club. Buckets does seem to be gone unfortunately but I don't think our forward hopes rest with Hooksy. Get the AA defender back where he can do the most damage!

Hooker has the most potential to become a Travis Cloke.

I would play him forward and occasionally drift him back for the match saving marks.

We need one sharp shooter half forward like a Luke Breust that rarely misses and the rest will follow suit.

I think really it will depend so much on what happens at the end of the season. If Carlisle is gone then it will depend on if we can trade for another KP forward or back - if we get a backman then maybe Hooker would stay forward. If we get a forward then he would be a backman. If we get neither then God help us.

If both Carlisle and Hooker are here next year then i would hope to see Hooker forward. I think long term he will make a better go of it than Carlisle. He's just stronger in the contest.

We are in experimentation mode, so it makes perfect sense to give Carlisle a few games in defence, in the back end of the season.

Agreed. I wasn't proposing that deal. Was more saying that, according to the "whispers", Carlton want him in the navy blue.

Although I do think that Henderson is underrated and is good overhead, you'd want a bit more.
**** carlton. couldnt do enough with all their number one picks now gona try and poach our players. THey can seriously rot

I'd take Carlton's first pick for Carlisle. They'd only eff it up so everyone wins. Otherwise I'd take Carlisle plus Stanton for Henderson plus Yarran. I think we could play Yarran on the wing and half forward to get the most of him.

Carlton list is twice as ****ed as ours, they wouldn't touch a player like Stanton with a barge pole.
