Hope we don't make the same mistakes as we did in this Draft

Looks like we're not on our Pat Malone there. Seem to be fairly slim pickings throughout those drafts. Brisbane seemed to manage a total of 44 games from 3 #1 picks. I think drafting has got a bit more sophisticated since then.

Was it 11 of the first 12 picks came from Perth as well?

The only real standout name there was Shane Crawford.

we traded picks and Micheal Pickering ,Trent Nichollsand David Regan? for Steven Jackson, Steve (pin my ears back) O'dwyer and Tod Breman.
And only ended up with pick 49 as our first pick. Then we drafted absolute duds that resulted in a total of 0 games for the club.
Then redrafted Mark (bigger arse than Knighta) Macqueen with pick 3 in the preseason draft and David Honybun with 17

The Mid season Draft was even worse.

I know it was all different back in those days but we were supposed to be the leaders in the youth policy.
We were really the leaders in not knowing what the hell we were doing.

Was probably due to the the fact that a second side from perth was on it's way and side wanted to get the best out of perth before freo arrived.

We were a bit stiff too. Stevan Jackson was as good a player as Earl Spalding when we grabbed him, but he was struck down by injury 3 years in a row. It was a testimony to his spirit that he was retained on the list for so long.

I used to be quite good mates with "Donkey" O'Dwyer when the Tigers picked him, and he was super-keen to put the Yellow and Black on, let me tell you. Again, he was struck down by a debilitating knee injury. Just bad luck.

Gwilliam ran into a goal post laterally and stuffed his leg after showing a bit ... and the rest were basically crap!

Doesn't look like many of our discards hurt us too bad, though.

10 Biggest Trade Blunders

Paul Gough has produced a list of the 10 biggest trade blunders on the AFL website. Interesting that Richmond are on the right side of 3 of them and the wrong side of 1. Maybe its the trades that weren't made that have led to our lack of on-field success.

9: RICHMOND: The Tigers decided to give Peter Wilson to West Coast in exchange for selections 18 and 32 in the 1989 national draft. Not only did Wilson go on to become a premiership player for the Eagles but the Tigers used those draft selections to select Robert Wren from Assumption College and Shaun Slater from St Arnaud, who did not play a single game between them.

8: FREMANTLE: The Dockers had the prized number two selection in the 1997 national draft but surrendered it to Richmond in exchange for Chris Bond. While Bond’s commitment could never be doubted he was near the end of his career and played just 41 games for the Dockers. The Tigers used that number two selection to recruit Brad Ottens, now one of the AFL’s most valuable players.

7: MELBOURNE: The Demons traded pick number 49 in the 1990 national draft to Richmond in exchange for Tigers wingman Phil Egan, even though he had not played at the top level since 1987. Egan would play just one game for the Demons while the Tigers used the Demons’ pick 49 to recruit Nick Daffy, who went on to play 165 games and win a best and fairest and leading goalkicker award for the Tigers.

5: FITZROY: This was the trade that helped lay the foundation for Richmond’s on-field revival as the Lions gave them Paul Broderick, Michael Gale and Matthew Dundas all in exchange for the number six selection in the 1993 national draft. While the Lions used that selection on little-known South Australian Trent Cummings, who played just 27 games – Broderick and Gale went on to play a combined tally of 260 games for the Tigers.

heres hoping you do something good for the doggies again (like coughing up draft picks for huddo last year).

This year my favourtie trade wheeze will be whoever coughs up a 2nd round pick for Nathon Eagleton.

Only 23! Nice left foot kick! What a bargain ;)

Didn't Jackson get sacked mid-season by the Tigers because he wasn't basically putting the effort in his rehab process? Your recollection of his time paints a far more noble picture of his time at Richmond.

Yeah, the Gwilliam injury happened at Football Park against the Crows, a long time ago now but he did seem to have some promise

Would love to know why we picked up John Kennedy from Hawthorn. Did he even train at Richmond?
