"I've got great belief in what he's going to be capable of achieving and I don't think he shares that belief at the moment," Buckley explained after the game. "It was designed as a prickle, it was designed to really challenge him and wake him up in some ways. We're getting about 85 per cent of what he's capable of right now and there's gold in that last 15 per cent".

I didn't find it as a major issue and it seems Rohan Connelly and others on SEN haven't either.

Further, I don't think that Buckley tweeting is an issue either. Footy is an emotional game (just read our posts during and after a game), although it did seem out of character for Buckley as normally he is very measured.

I don't like the way Bucks went about his business with Witts in public, and I like the way we posters turn on each other even less.

If players have genuine buy in to what they're being asked to do they would prefer that accountability is public, that is behaviour of a great team.

Most importantly what does jarrod Witte think about it?? I think it worked and bucks believes in him like he said he just needs to believe In himself.

As I've said before when Maxie gave a bit to Fas, that style of leadership is not my cup of tea. I'm not precious having been on the receiving end and having dished out that type of tough love in the army. It's just not my personal style these days, and I get that that's how footy clubs tick. It's all good; Bucks apologised, and Witts responded well.

Edit: feel free to disagree with me, I won't pile drive anyone. :)

It's passion, and it worked. He stepped up in the last quarter.
I welcome it.
Or Hawthorn stepped down seeing as the game was in the bag.

Bucks came out and basically said that it was a heat of the moment thing and that it doesn't reflect anything on Witts, but more so on him.

I didn't like it. You can't man handle a player simple. You can spray them, but that's it.

I was a little bit worried about Bucks that he used to look like too gentle to his boys and never be aggressive at them. I am happy to see what Bucks did to Witts that now he seems like know different ways to motivate players. Sometimes players need to be sprayed to fire up and we all saw what Witts did at last quarter. Nuff said

Glad to see that from Bucks myself, puts to bed any doubts he could give a decent spray. Grabbing the jumper is a bit of a bad look in these crazy PC times and he admitted as much. Wittsy seemed to take it the right way.
All good IMO.

Can't have the coach manhandling a player like he did. A footy club is still a workplace and if my boss did that to me the shit would hit the fan.
Pretty sure if your work place is centered around physical contact and hundreds of thousands of dollars then you'd cop a little bit of that.
If the language that these guys speak is physicality, then good on Bucks for speaking in their language. Sometimes "hey... Just letting you know that you're not really playing as good as I know you can..." doesn't cut it. Sometimes people need to be yelled at.

The good thing is that Bucks isn't saying "you're crap". He's getting annoyed at Witts because he believes that Witts is an absolute gun. Why else would he play him ahead of Grundy? Bucks is saying "Dude, you're massive, you're decent and you're young... Bloody have a go, son! Get your hands dirty and realise your potential!"

Agree.
I love bucks, have a huge respect for him but if he had done that to me in public I would have piledriven his head in to the hallowed mcg turf 5 seconds later. I'll cop a spray but you put your hands on me like that you get slammed and you learn your lesson.
So you'd risk losing a spot on an AFL list because you jumper got pulled?

I don't like. It degrades a player, some players take it well, some don't.

Maybe if it was towards an experienced player, maybe, but when it's to a younger less experienced player, who knows how they might deal with it. Lucky Witts took it well.

Well Bucks has been working with Witts for the past 5 years so maybe he has a better idea than us about how Witts would take it?

Watched Witts closely yesterday and man he has a lot of shortcomings at this stage.

I lost my rag at him numerous times for his weak efforts, many of which cost us big time when the game was actually up for grabs.

He needs to be taught and taught quickly how to hold his ground in a marking contest.
Any who think this is being harsh just need to watch him specifically as the ball approaches - he has zero physical presence in these contests and rarely clunks a mark with virtually no chance in a contested situation.

Rioli bumped him off the ball at one point simply because he was committed and wanted it more. Witts is too passive and I'm absolute sure this is why Bucks gave it to him.

I chatted to him for a while at VFL game last year or so, he's like a sweet little teenager trapped in a hulks body. Someone has to get into his head and instil some mongrel and intensity into him and he'd be transformed.

And these cute little dinks he does in the ruck at the moment gave no semblance of appropriateness when they go direct to opposition more often than they go to our guys.

Hugely overrated on this board.

Promising... yes maybe, but ready now... you're frigging joking.

Well done Bucks, hopefully you gave the little boy inside a fright. And the man inside may be unleashed a little earlier as a result.

Grundy for mine at this stage every day of the week.

It's interesting how Buckley is getting to be more like Mick as time progresses...... more defensive.... more intimidation of players....the next step will be more facial hair

Haha turn it up!

Bucks was giving Wittsy a kick up the arse that he required and for mine justified his reasons in his press conference very well. Witts plays like a small man and needs to stand up, play strong and start clunking grabs. I rate Wittsy highly and when he starts doing what Bucks is after we will begin to see a very good ruckman.

You're very very precious OP.

I wanted to do the same thing bucks did. Witts was frustrating the hell out of me.

Looks like Tarzan but plays like jane. Someone needed to kick him in the arse.

Bucks was right to do what he did.

And it worked. 2 goals and another strong field mark was the response.

No story here

Nathan will have a better idea of how his players tick than any of us on the outside.

If Nathan feels as he suggested in his post game press conference that it's something that works for Witts then I have no issue with it.

It's a part of football and it's surprising the media have even made an issue of it. Clearly a slow news day on the ASADA front.

This thread is a disgrace. My god it's football. Next we will have a player threatening to sue after a heavy hit. Footy is not an office job. Physicality is part of the culture and the job. Every has sprayed his players.

It worked. Just like when Maxy got aggressive with Fasolo. I can't believe this is a discussion. He wanted him to look at him and listen. Barely touched his jumper. The negativity around Bucks and trying to find issues where there are none is a joke. The ignore button looking better everyday.
