Opinion Horlin-Smith must play every week

That was definitely Corey's best game for probably close to 12 months as well. Funny that when you put him in the midfield, and allow him to do what he does best (ie win contested footy) he flourishes rather than have him down back where he looks lost most of the time.

It's also fantastic for these kids to be playing in the same team as Corey, Bartel, SJ and Kelly - it will only help to fast track their development and make them better footballers.

We now have the luxury of being able to do a bit of rotation in our midfield allowing both young and old to be rested at appropriate times during the season. I will be interested to see come finals time, assuming we are there, what our midfield makeup will look like. In any case we can be pretty confident that the future of our club is as good as can be planned when you consider the quality and quantity of the players that will be retiring over the next few years.

don't agree with this, only reason why Corey appears to be playing better is because the step up by the younger kids in the team is beginning to eventuate as we hoped and it's taken a bit of pressure away from the older players such as Corey who have been relied on for years on end.

He played no different to how he played last year, in fact, he had fewer clearances and fewer tackles last night than he usually does...but because Geelong won, and won it fairly convincingly, people change their view on certain players and this is Corey's issue in my opinion.
Has been playing like he did last night for the last couple of seasons.

just envision where this kid will be at in 4 years time
if he looks fairly comfortable right now, we could be looking at a seriously wonderful midfield again...Christensen, Caddy, Horlin-Smith, Hunt and Duncan

The faster we can get that bunch to 60-100 games (as well as Motlop, Smedts, Murdoch et al) the stronger the team will be.

would like to have another big sized midfielder, someone around Corey's size as we won't have this type when he retires unless Thurlow or Smedts can make the slow progression through the middle.

Going by the VFL they might be thinking of playing Guthrie through there. Personally I'd keep playing him the backline but it looks like they fancy him as a midfielder too.

And Selwood....!

yep of course, so most of those boys are 22 or 21 and Selwood is 2 years ahead of them, I tend to think Selwood's like 4 years older but it's only due to how brilliant he was from day 1 so all these boys will be together for a good 7-10 years just as the past champion crop of Kelly, Bartel, Corey, Ablett and Ling were.

A few on here have suggested Guthrie could move into the midfield. His foot skills are elite.

He will be back in the team before long. ....and will play a lot of games for the hoops. :thumbsu:

Agree. I think Smedts could do it in time.

Watched him in the VFL yesterday and not only are his foot skills fantastic but his composure and decision making is first class. He's an AFL player. You would have no problem having him come in for a senior player as part of a rotation. I like that he has a strong defensive mindset as well.

How lucky are we that the dilemna facing our club is never "Who can we promote", but always "Who the hell do we drop/ rest/ introduce to Mr Niggle?". This is a sensationally run club and team.

And over the years we have had very little players leave to get playing opportunities elsewhere, majority of them playing for other teams are delistings with most opting to stay to fight for a spot.
Realistically we could have lost a majority of our youngsters would would be walk up starts in a lot of other teams.

Says volumes for the culture of the club!

He didn't star yesterday (only saw the first three quarters), but every now and again he looked way above VFL level. Is it just me, or is he noticeably stronger now? A couple of times he just bounced off attempted tackles and came out with the ball, looked sensational. Some terrific smothers also, like seemingly every one of our kids, they all do the basics. He'll be back in soon you would think.

There was one piece of play which I'm sure helped form your opinion where he was able to extract the ball in the middle under duress with a great piece of play that resulted in a goal. There was another where he won his own footy in the back line with a great pickup and twist and dished off a pass perfectly. Those two pieces of play show that he he is up to it. He made a couple of errors but often when you play in a lower grade that will happen. I'd like to see him come in for Smedts or Chappy in the next fortnight.

Id agree with that , it seems our top 27,28 are very worth of game time. Guthrie is too good for the VFL now. Id still like him to be a little bigger , he will be very good player from 23,24 on. The sooner his game tally build , the better. But one could say that for a few of our players.

Makes sense, they'll be rotating guys shortly. Chapman could be a candidate for this week. Say again though, I was really impressed by how much stronger he looked. Much like Taylor Hunt is showing in the seniors too. Off-topic but his tackles seem to be really sticking now.

Without wishing into the future, and being dismissive of how genuinely competitive we are in 2013, imagine this scenario:

We're going to have a team that may have Hawkins at full forward, Taylor at centre half back, and Selwood in the middle. Then, you might have these guys all between 60-80 games or more - Mitch Duncan, Taylor Hunt, Trent West, Allen Christensen, Steven Motlop, Cameron Guthrie, George Horlin-Smith, Josh Caddy, Jordan Murdoch, Billie Smedts, Nathan Vardy and Mitch Brown.

That's 12 players. Over half a side. As cautious as I am, the only word I can think of is wow.

I hear you , and im sure your caution has only been enhanced with likes of Menzel. And for that matter Ablett.

Id say there will be a player or 2 , that for what ever reason will not be on the list by that stage . Its just the way it works. To balance that , there will be a name or 2 , that may not have that 60/80 tally who play beyond their years when the side is around them. (Selwood in 07)

In 18 team comp , the best we can hope for is setting ourselves up to have a side good enough to be top 4/6. Then after that its what happens in games, injuries, luck, opposition .... but I do agree we look to be building a group that will be competitive when GC and GWS are thinking & striving to be winning flags.

The other one that looked ok in patches was Bews I thought. Haven't watched the whole game yet but he did a few nice things in the vision I saw. Has put on a fair bit of size as well.

One thing I did notice about Bews was his chasing speed, the kid has got some real acceleration, most of the time he didn't quite get to the opponent but by heck he closed them down.
Only his first game back and did alright I thought, has a powerful build now and looks set to really develop from now on.
Liked the look and desparation of Guthrie, he is another George Horlin type, no nonsense go in and get it type,
needs senior development any time, I agree for rotation sake he's got to be at the top of the list.
