Sunline last night won the Australian Horse of the Year for the 3rd year in a row. While it is a great effort, I thought Ethereal had the goods to win the award. I know Sunline had a very good year, but it did not win the Cox Plate. Ethereal won the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup as well as a few other good races. Northerly was also unlucky, and when you look at, any three of them could have won it, but I just thought Ethereal deserved it.

Northerly should have won it. He beat Sunline both times, fair and square.

Sunline on the other hand may have won many Group 1's but none better than the All Aged Stakes in Sydney where she beat such top class Group 1 performers in Tears Royal and Mowerman.

They absolutely raved about this performance. But she was carrying 55.5 and was up against handicappers. She should have spanked them by a big margin and she did. It was nothing as great as the media made out.

Ethereal was unlucky not to win, she won the Cups double then beat Universal Prince in Sydney in the BMW but the Cups winner rarely gets it these days.

Too close to call, three completely different horses.
All would have been worthy winners.

Hard to agree with the "Northerly beat Sunline twice theory",
if that was the criteria then Old Comrade should have been nominated.

Great talking point but in the end it was personal choice.
Just great to have had 3 champions in one racing year.
