The fact that Longmire didn't put his hand up for 5 vacant coaching jobs last year is vindication that he would one day take over the Swans a senior coach. Whenever the time comes for Roosy to step aside, I think that Longmire would be an ideal replacement. He knows the stuctures and team disciplines inside out and if he's good enough for Roosy, he's good enough for me.

Actually he did want the Saints job, but Lyon got it before him.
I was actually talking about '07. He was the front runner for the Saints job in '06 but he didn't get it. Surely if he was in the mix for a job in '06 he would have been at least mentioned for anyone of 5 jobs in '07. I think it's just a formality really.

i would hope that the club would look at all availiable coaching talent,i do rate the horse but you must look at all options.
I agree to a certain extent but Longmire would have a huge advantage over any other candidates. He's been Roosy right hand man for some time now. Roosy got the job in a similar way when he was Eade's assistant. Although the Wallace debacle didn't help. He still got the job and he's been a seansational coach for us.

it's a given that longmire will take over, and depending on the way the season unfolds i still think there's some chance it'll happen before it's scheduled, ie, the end of the 09 season
but it makes sense, and it's good to have a progression schedule in place
look at how essendon did it ... for years they had kevin sheedy in position to take over from kevin sheedy when he was ready to step down

I don't think Roosy will be around for much longer.I have heard on the grapevine that when he finishes up in the AFL he will be moving to the US where his missus is from.

yeah, there's no doubt he'll be departing the swans job, and probly australia, sooner rather than later
he made jokes last week, when the western sydney team thing blew up, about being in hawaii by the time a new sydney team got started

Its a bit saddening isn't?

Wouldn't mind having Longmire coaching us, as long as Roosy thinks he's the man for the job seeing he knows the club inside and out.

It is a bit sad,Roosey has been our most successful coach since the move to
Sydney. Were just lucky that we have had some sort of coaching stability,
in recent times, compared with other clubs.

The truth of the matter is that all of those other clubs engaged external consultants/committes to headhunt candidates and develop a shortlist and, from what we have been told, he wasn't approached. He could have applied anyway I suppose but it suggests (to me) that only one season on from being the hottest coaching commodity on the market, other clubs aren't particularly interested in Sydney's negative style of play anymore (whether it's a perceived style or not). Ross Lyon's tough run at St Kilda has hardly been a ringing endorsement and other clubs just don't seem to want their teams to play footy like we do.

As for who should take over post-Roos. I don't care if Longmire is currently being groomed for the role with the consent of the Board or not. The Swans Board has an obligation to everyone involved with the Club to get the best possible coach from whomever's available and interested. That can only mean a GENUINE and open sweeping recruitment process run by people who know what they are doing. Simply gifting the job to anyone would be just plain wrong and dangerous.

Nathan Buckley looks a good candidate to me.

Nothing but respect for him as a player and sounds like he has the genuine footy smarts to me when he is commentating.

Do you think if Longmire does take over we will play the same 'Roos' style of play or do you think Longmire will take a more attacking approach??
I have said it before we need some fresh ideas in our coaching panel, somebody straight out of the game not mates of roosy.
Horse will have been a few years from playing if he takes over in a couple of years.

I don't know what to think. It is always nice to reward loyalty, but I think lots of supporters are getting frustrated with the way the Swans play and want more free-flowing football (or have I been reading too much of the bitching about the Swans on the other boards?)
