I love it how media are saying "this is not yet an act of terror". Clearly the police are working with the media to try and trick the, erm, terrorist, into thinking he can get away without being charged with terrorism charges.

campaigner is going to get waterboarded fo' real.
Really?

Has it been confirmed whether the 5 people that got out where released by the guy or they escaped?

f**king ballsy move if they escaped and amazing that he hasn't done something outrageous like killing or injuring someone as a statement that he isn't messing around.

This guy seems weak
SMH were saying "escaped". Tele was saying "let out".

Within the first few hours he didn't kill anyone so it was obvious this was not ISIS, with the only potential play being distracting resources to attack somewhere else. This guy is just a lone wolf piss ant thankfully.

A mate just told that he heard on some news that the gunman has a machete - anyone else heard this?
Rumor is that he was walking around with it this morning with the flag on his back. Saw the cops and ran inside the cafe.

That to me says why he is alone and now left making it up on the spot. It was a planned attack, but not in this cafe.

That theory hinges entirely on the first paragraph being true.

Wait so he was just parading around Martin Place holding a Machete?

This rumour is definitely plausible

Not sure how the first 3 got out. This video will show the first guy (employee) exits between the foreground brown pillar and the fire escape door that you see ajar. So in between that is another door where the employee and swat cop emerge. The 2 other guys, old man in blue and guy in white shirt emerge in front of the foreground brown pillar.

well for all we know the cops have eyes in the room and dont want to tip off they have more info then he's aware.
they may also be unsure how many are inside and don't want to give false information.
Possibly, but they would be more than aware of how many are in there, they've had enough chance to interview 5 who escaped.

Yes, I would think the people who have been held hostage for the past 11 hours would definitely feel "terrorised". No doubt it's an act of terrorism.

I think that the man was going to go somewhere else, someone spotted him and told the police, so he ducked into the cafe, and held the people hostage, because things didn't go to plan and he has got desperate.

Also, not making demands might mean that the guy is some amateur and is more desperate than a major threat. His actions don't scream "criminal genius". Sounds like some campaigner who has got in over his head and likes showing how he can cause chaos.

Looks like the boss of the swat team rolled up, he was having a joke with a swat guy, they were smiling, more plain clothes cops on the street now, one was looking up to a roof, sniper maybe?
