somewhat of a silly question, but what is the actual role of a negotiator?
Try and make a deal with the baddie so that (in this case) we get all the hostages out safe, but the campaigner gets something so that he will let them out

It's like trying to make a trade

He might kill them regardless.

Why do people think that someone like this will "do the right thing" when, if they did the right thing before, they wouldn't be in this situation?

Someone who carries a gun and holds people hostage is not likely to be the most honest and trustworthy person. So why do we think he can be appeased?

I say,if it is one perpetrator, draw him to the window, and get a police sniper to take him out. Then rescue the hostages.

Who cares if civil libertarians cry about you taking out the perp? People should be thanking the police for rescuing the hostages, not condemning them if they shoot the crim.
whats this sniper shit? if they take him out they will breach. yes snipers are good. but a lot can go wrong with a sniper. hell all it takes is the dickhead to trip over right as you squeeze the trigger and no amount of training will change physics.

tac officers train over and over and over and over and always resort to breaches when they have to end a siege violently for one reason its more effective. a sniper is their for 2 reason one is as a counter sniper the other is overwatch and support.

if they go do anything they will flash bang and enter from multiple entry points. despite what tv tells you a breach is safer and more efficient then a sniper. what happens if there's another guy that you don't know about? you just killed everyone. no one uses a sniper in this situation.

I think most people would like this outcome but what if that backpack he has strapped to his back is full of explosives? Or if the rumor floating around that his brothers have bombs spread around Sydney are true

Have to think of the bigger picture
1. Bomb in backpack - possible but unlikely. He would have detonated by now. Maybe he was going somewhere else and was going to leave the bag and his mate had the detonator? Again, possible but unlikely

2. Other bombs elsewhere. We can pretty much rule this out. Would have happened in the first few hours when there was maximum distraction and maximum deployment of resources.

They are standing behind a police shield and occaisionally one guy pokes his head around and thats all you see, but a couple a minutes ago, they were all lined up behind each other adjusting their night vision and looking down the street, could be close to 'go' time.
Just that on channel 7?

But whenever an issue like boatpeople is discussed, it seems to never be "a good time".

People are too afraid to say anything because they may be branded "racist".
Or maybe some people can't discuss the issue without coining all asylum seekers as "terrorists" or people who take our jobs etc.

Can only dream of being this good

In fairness they've been doing it all day (without the googles, coz it was daytime)
