Why do people keep saying SWAT and SAS when we have neither of them in Australia?
because we are raised on Yank TV

What are the NSW version called ?
I think in Vic it's called S.O.G [Special Operations Group] and S.A I think have Star Force.
What are the other states versions called ?

Is it called the TRG (Tactical Response Group) in NSW?

I wouldn't have thought this would be an SAS job. This is the TRG's bread and butter.
Th SASR are the ones that teach the TRG urban counter terrorism, they do the same with the Navy Seals etc

The Australian SAS are the absolute world specialists in urban counter terrorism, it's what they are known for, rather than what they have been doing in recent times in Afghan and Iraq.

Happy to look like an idiot, but I've always wondered in this situation why there isn't some sort of gas/anaesthesia product than can be pumped into a room/building that just puts everyone's lights out.

They all wake up half an hour later with bad guy in handcuffs.

Just seems like something science could do.
its getting the everything right, Russia, algria, kenya and i think america have all killed people trying it. France also attempted it and failed spectacularly it was in a morbid way funny in that they didn't only not knock the terrorists out but managed to give everyone hallucinations including the spec ops team they sent in as they took their masks off due to limited visibility.

you need to not only understand the area your gasing but understanding how the air moves around in there, others have mentioned getting the oxygen/gas ratios right so you don't asphyxiate people.

both russia and us ended up starting fires.

Figures. Why campaigner though?

This guy must have (or claims to have) some sort of bomb right? You'd think after all this time they'd have figured out a way into the building to take him out as quickly as possible. I know they say all they care about is getting the hostages out safely, but the longer this goes on, and the guy's demands are inevitably not met, surely the risk of him doing something worse grows higher?

Im not going to read 30 odd pages but can anyone fill me on whether they've confirmed there are multiple gunmen? Seems crazy that one guy could pull off a 12 odd hour hostage situation (unless he's got a bomb in his backpack)?
Just in: there are in fact 15 gunmen and one hostage, so its a bit tricky now

I suspect It can be done but it's more the case of the unknown. I.e a bomb.
I just don't think it is that easy. Surely the gunman will realise not to hang around windows and with the added threat of hitting a human "shield", it is more difficult that it seems.
