Mega Thread Hot Topic - Drugs and AFL

Watson could use the Russell Ebert defence. I don't know where it is. I'll check behind the couch. Maybe it's under the fridge.

Forgive me Father, for I have sinned...

Yes?

I was going to post a joke about Russell Ebert being on drugs...

You were?

Yes, after his name was mentioned in the hot-topic-drugs-and-AFL thread...

But you thought better of it?

Yes, Father...

Just as well - say five Hail Russells and buy two extra raffle books

AFL hits Giants with massive fine over Whitfield saga
GREATER Western Sydney has been fined $100,000 and 1000 draft points for the actions of two club officials, Graeme Allan and Craig Lambert, and its player Lachie Whitfield, that saw the club charged with conduct unbecoming
.

The club's charge followed an incident last year where Allan and Lambert arranged for Whitfield to stay at Lambert's house in order to avoid the possibility of a drug test out of fear he may fail it. A sub-committee of the AFL Commission consisting of chairman Mike Fitzpatrick and commission members Jason Ball and Paul Bassat made the decision on Thursday morning that the club had to bear some responsibility for the affair after hearing from the Giants.

However the sub-committee noted that the club board, chief executive Dave Matthews and chief operating officer had no knowledge of the conduct so their governance could not be criticised. Despite the mitigating factors, the AFL still decided the club had to be penalised. The Giants had been formally charged in November with "conduct which is unbecoming or likely to prejudice the interests or reputation of the AFL or to bring the game of football into disrepute". However the decision was deferred until after this year's NAB AFL Draft when the club decided to contest the charge.

The loss of 1000 points will have a minimal affect on the Giants' ability to recruit academy graduates but it does limit their drafting capacity with 1000 points being about the equivalent of pick No.15, the selection the club took into the 2016 draft. Allan had left the Giants and joined Collingwood before he was finally charged in 2016. However he resigned from his position as Collingwood football manager when he received a 12-month suspension in November. Lambert joined the Brisbane Lions as the club's welfare officer and is serving his one-year ban while Whitfield received a six-month suspension which will keep him sidelined until round eight.

The AFL basically paying its own fine then. Chump change with a soft utensil penalty.

What I don't understand is the draft penalty component of the total penalty ie this bit of above penalty plus the earlier penalty to the 3 individuals.

I'm not sure why the draft picks should be affected by this? There wasn't any draft tampering or salary cap tampering which like the draft is the key equalisation policy so when Carlton Freo and others have be caught salary cap dodging, they deserved to lose draft picks and $$$$.

When Melbourne got fined for tanking the footy club got a $500k fine and the individuals involved got bans. No draft penalties. The GWS situation is more like that than the Essendon situation that was long term systemic doping that required a decent long term hit via a draft penalty.

An excuse to rob the Giants of an academy player/force them to trade a star to a Victorian club is what it is. The AFL knows they ****ed up with the concessions that the Giants received. This is an opportunity to rectify it. Removing the equivalent of a late first round draft pick pushes GWS back just enough so they can't continually cycle through as a super team for the next ten years.

Some of you will remember the Richmond recruiter paradoy that went up on You Tube in October. If you haven't type in the title, SHOCKING interview with Richmond FC recruiter on the Josh Caddy deal in YouTube.

About a week before that this Sky Cycling one was done, about a minute longer and blackcat put up in the cycling board doping thread.

FORMER Essendon coach James Hird has been rushed to hospital in Melbourne, reportedly after suffering an overdose.

Seven News reported Ambulance Victoria was called to Hird’s Toorak home at 10.07pm Wednesday to attend a “poisoning overdose”.

The father-of-four was taken to Cabrini Hospital in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs but he is understood to have been transferred to another medical facility on Thursday morning, where he is continuing to receive treatment.

It says it was of a 'serious and disturbing nature'

Very sad - doesn't sound good. Hope he gets the help he needs. Likewise for anyone else who may need help with depression and or anxiety, please don't be afraid to reach out and let others know you might need some help or just someone to chat with, most people are willing to help and offer a friendly ear.

Perhaps you should avoid posting conjecture regarding someone's private health information. It is no one's business but his own. If he needs help he will be offered it.

Not only this, but if the information is ever traced back to a medical professional, it can mean serious charges.

Yep. There were pretty serious consequences for medical staff that accessed Cy Walsh's blood exams with no clinical reason to.

Because behind the scenes the other clubs wanted draft penalties. The AFL can't do anything without a deal. They haven't learned from the Essendon saga at all.

Hope that it all works out well for James Hird and that he and his family are allowed to get on with their lives.

The fact that the system cannot force Dank to answer and that others are paying a price is a sad reflection on the system. While the latest developments are sad and regrettable no one should be surprised.

Get well quickly James Hird.

Sorry mate hird is just as much to blame

He is, but Dank has always said he has the smoking gun to clear all of there names, yet he's kept his trap shut throughout this scandal.
What does he want to happen, someone to take there own life before he talks?

I'm fearing for all the players involved in this now post AFL career, If the coach can't handle what has happened, what hope do the players have when they stop playing.
