Everybody I know who is a reader loves and recommends this book. I haven't read it so can't give you an opinion but like you, I think I might give it a go.

I didn't really care for it. Read it a long time ago, but I remember finding all the marginalia incredibly distracting and frustrating. Interesting concept, though.

 

[La Dispute]

Loved it, couldn't stop reading despite by like 1000 pages and being practically hard to get through with essentially an essay, a couple of other storylines and a whole bunch of other stylistic tidbits that add to the whole experience.

The book that got me back into reading, in the early 00's, after a hiatus. Loved it at the time, not sure I could read it again though.
