Teams Houston Texans - Battle Red

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Deshaun Watson is upset over the Texans' hiring process for general manager and has not spoken to team brass "in the last few days."
Yikes. ESPN's Adam Schefter adds more context, reporting Watson met with owner Cal McNair and "shared thoughts on certain candidates that came highly recommended." The front office reportedly promised Watson he would have input. Per Schefter, Watson "did not expect Houston to hire those that he endorsed, but he was hoping the Texans would be respectful of the feelings of the group of his teammates that he was trying to represent." Instead, Watson was apparently kept completely out of the loop and found out about Nick Caserio's hiring on social media. The episode especially stung Watson because he was also kept in the dark on DeAndre Hopkins' trade. None of this is surprising coming from one of the most dysfunctional organizations in North American sports. The Texans still possess nearly all of the leverage after extending Watson's contract in September, but we wouldn't consider it a guarantee that the superstar remains in Houston.

They've basically written the textbook on how to piss off a franchise QB over the past few seasons.

It's amazing what one or two toxic egomaniacal people can do to a football organization.

I may be wrong about him, but what makes it more suprising is that I don't see any evidence of DeShaun being someone who would be hard to deal with or talk to either?

No, he comes across like a genuine all round good guy. Hed have a fire to win, competitive streak, demand better from those around him, a leader. But not in a bad way

Exactly right. A sportsman has a limited time at the top and every poor decision club makes wastes another year of his career. Yeah they are paid more than enough but still. Stafford is another one.

Texans CEO Cal McNair said he hasn't heard from Deshaun Watson and hopes to speak with him soon.
"I've come to understand that it's been reported that Deshaun feels left out of the process, but he and I had several visits and I understood his point of view before meeting with candidates," McNair said Friday. "I've reached out to Deshaun about Nick's hire, and I look forward to him getting back to me when he returns from his vacation." It's clearly lost on McNair that Watson was heard before Caserio's hiring then practically ignored in the next step of Houston's search. The Texans also didn't so much as request an interview with Chiefs OC Eric Bienemy, who was the one coach Watson strongly advocated for when asked his opinions. Caserio claims Watson "is our quarterback" moving forward, but an early split in ideology is a horrific start for both sides.

Its happening -- Miami and Watson ?

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Texans QB Deshaun Watson "is still angry about team's insensitivity to social justice."
Mort added that Watson's anger over the team's insensitivity to social justice issues includes their hiring practices and not even giving Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy an interview. Watson has reportedly gone to bat for Bieniemy within the Houston organization and Bieniemy's record should speak for itself. He has been the Chiefs OC in all three of Patrick Mahomes' three seasons as a starter and is serving under arguably the greatest offensive-minded head coach in the NFL, Andy Reid. Houston's refusal to interview him is questionable at best. Mort included the fact that Watson's new contract gave him a no-trade clause. With the no-trade clause in his deal, the Texans can't simply move Watson to the highest bidder. They will have to find a place Watson wants to land for him to waive the clause. Mort's sources speculated that a deal with Miami involving Tua Tagovailoa would be considered by Watson. The deal may be best for both parties at Tagovailoa has failed to live up to expectations in his first year and Watson's relationship with Houston may be fractured beyond repair.

Would love to see Watson in Miami, would be some mighty fun matchups with the Bills over the next few seasons.

Great deal for the Fins but why the F would Houston even consider taking on Tagovailoa 🤷‍♂️:

That would be like trading in a perfectly tuned Mercedes AMG c 63 for a Kia Getz with a dodgy gearbox.

No one in their right mind would do that...... B OB has left the building so no such hoddwinking, will now be entered into.

Can’t see Caserio buying that dud deal.

The Texans have requested permission to interview Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy for their head-coaching vacancy.
The Texans have supposedly "essentially started their search over" since hiring GM Nick Caserio. Franchise player Deshaun Watson was furious when the team did not even reach out to Bieniemy, who is arguably the strongest candidate available this winter. Of course, this could amount to little more than an empty gesture, as the Texans missed the initial window to interview Bieniemy. Now they can't talk to him until after the Super Bowl or following the Chiefs' elimination. The Chiefs, of course, are in commanding position to reach another title game. Bieniemy probably doesn't have the luxury of keeping this opportunity open, as it would be extremely rare for a departing Super Bowl coordinator not to have his next job unofficially lined up before the big game.

What a quality answer 😂

Is Cal McNair now the unequivocal 2nd worst owner in the NFL? (Dan Snyder is the uncontested worst)

Neither have any idea what he does

He prints out motivational cat posters and walks around the facility shouting the mottos at people to "build culture" ;)

Long article but quite revealing, some may say a witch hunt by SI, including Easterby who was thinking of suing them but that’s not SI style...this s**t is bizarre...

Deshaun Watson also recommended Robert Saleh for an interview; the Texans didn’t talk to him

As the Texans try to repair the damage the team has inflicted on the relationship with quarterback Deshaun Watson, the full extent of the divide is coming into even clearer focus.
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Watson recommended not only Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy for a head-coaching interview but also former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. The Texans during the first week after the regular season ended made a request to interview neither.
The Texans eventually requested permission to interview Bieniemy during this past week. However, because the interview didn’t happen during the Kansas City bye week, the Texans must now wait until the Chiefs’ season ends before talking to Bieniemy.
The Texans did not request permission to interview Saleh at any time. Saleh, who was interviewed by every team with a vacancy except the Texans, recently became the new head coach of the Jets.
Watson’s recommendations came at the invitation of owner Cal McNair, who decided to involve Watson in the process. Watson suggested Bieniemy and Saleh after talking to other players around the league, and after consulting with Watson’s Houston teammates.
From Watson’s perspective, the failure to interview these candidates made no sense, given that the Zoom interviews by video conference are easily arranged and executed.
It’s unclear whether eventually hiring Bieniemy will resolve Watson’s broader concerns regarding the organization, especially given the perception (or reality) that the Texans asked to interview Bieniemy solely to placate Watson. However, the failure to also interview Saleh and to initially request permission to interview Bieniemy is being regarded by Watson as a sign of disrespect, given that ownership specifically included him in the process.
