Optimism yes,outlandish no.So you don't do lotto or gamble then I take it.The second half of the season usually has the teams with a lot of young guys struggle as it goes on and I think we are still in with a good chance to make it.

Last year we were 11-2 for matches at Subi, not 8-4. The rest is correct.

By all means be a 'realist' but by your reasoning, most people who follow sport must be morons. If people showing optimism anoys you why don't you just hand in your membership and bugger off.

I'm a fickle bastard. 3 games on and I'm not so sure. Win in sydney and we're in with a chance.Like many, I'm all a bit het up at the fact that we are currently 12th. So I thought I'd take a bit of a deeper look and make some comparisons to see if we are as bad as we think.
So we've played 10 games. For the first 4 of those we had no Farmer, Johnson, Black, Schammer, Peake. Hase and Bell were down on form or not having an impact. Crowley was not fully fit. so we had some reltaively serious personnel issues. A key issue is our key forwards accuracy has dropped off by about 20%.
Of the 10 games we have played 7 of the top 8. We have beaten 3rd and 5th at home. We have lost to 1st at home. We lost to 2nd by 4 goals, to 4th by 9 points and 6th by 10 points. We have only played bottom 8 three times and have lost one of those to Brisbane who are very inconsistent. The played really well against us -- the bastards!
So it seems we can mix it with anyone. Especially, if we have a better run with injuries and suspensions. The next three games are against teams outside the 8. If we win those we are 7 and 6. Leaves 6 games to win from 9 for a half-decent season. Forget Sydney at the SCG. I'm going to that game so we are bound to lose.
Leaves 6 from 8. I'd think we are a chance in all 8 of those. We play both Adelaide teams at AAMI and Saints at Telstra. These are winnable. The rest are all at home. Except for 1, they are against top 8 sides including Geelong and West Coast.
Its a tough ask. My heart says we can do it. My head says there isn't enough evidence over the last four seasons for us to be that potent or consistent.
So its doable but can we do it?

Great analysis Doc....Makes it all the more infuriating considering the hype around the club going into the season and what we saw last year.
Farmer's omission cannot be understated, the guy got us going toward the end of last season. We have a massive amount of mark's inside 50 yet no one at the feet of our new "star" forward line.
Speed around the ground I think is on the other hand paid too much attention to, we have problems clearing the ball. But I am not sure if it is as much to do with speed as people claim.
Another thread pointed out our lad's in the middle's fear of kicking goals, this is another massive problem.
Backline letting in too many goals is the game we play, our guys put faith in their teammates and stream forward. Grover and Hayden have been exceptional.
McPharlin though has been down, his lack of form has also caused massive problems.

It's not so much that our lack of speed hurts our clearances but I definitely think it hurts us when the opposition are on top in the middle and we can't keep up with them.

No, it's also clean hands. We have a number of two-touch players -- M Carr, Schammer, Cook, Walker, and occasionally Josh Carr and Macca.

That must be the reason. Matt played a big part in recruiting Josh, and they don't want to upset the vice captain by dropping his brother.
It was fantastic that they dropped Colonel Parker when his form was poor. If they were going to persevere with an out of form player I would have prefered it to be our games record holder than a mediocre midfielder who has only been here for 5 or 6 years.
I can see the argument here. M. Carrs shutdown form has been good , but his offensive form has been poor.
We were saying the same things last year though and He came really good.
As one of the better aerobicly equiped in the team ( i read some where he averages 18km / game) there is not much doubt that him going down cost us in Darwin and last year in the P.F.

Doddy can shut players down, take a mark and hit a target. Give Mundy or Johnson some responsibility (there won't be room for Mundy at half forward now anyway) and relocate Dodd.
I wouldn't say he came really good, he started doing his job without starring.
It doesn't matter how far he runs if he can't catch and can't kick. If he had played 4 quarters in Darwin we would still have lost, infact we would probably have lost by more.

Don't know about the last bit ( I can't see how having a good shutdown player miss 3 quarters can be a help) but I am with you on the Doddy bit.
