Roos spoke to the AFL about Sydney's "shocking run". Will Ross Lyon query what happened on Saturday night?
Lol. You serious? Roos spoke to the AFL about the treatment of Hall, which had taken place over a large number of game and had been commented on by the umpires boss at least once.

What's Lyon going to say, exactly?

As a Saints fan who was at the game, I thought the umpiring was generally pretty good. There were lots of soft frees, and a lot of them went to the Swans, but they went to the Swans because they were going in first for the ball a lot, particularly in the second half. Frankly, I reckon that's OK.

For those who are whinging about the umpiring put yourselves in the shoes of an umpire and try and do their job. You will find that it is as hard as buggery and here you guys are whinging about them doing their job.
I have done it. There was a very good point made above.

You only call what you see. I am not blaming anybody for our loss, except ourselves, least of all the umpires. There have been times they have definately cost us game (usually against Freo - bring on this week!), but not this time.

However, it is a valid point to say, "I did not see it", to a player. It usually goes down well.

All suppoerters ask for is consistency, not that we can see it ourselves.

I would be interested to know if the respective teams were told before the match that less opposrunity would be given for holding the ball, and if they were able to make selection changes for a reinterpetation.

One thing is for sure, can the AFL just leave the bloody rule alone for a few seasons and be consistent on interpretation over that time? Might make the job easier for the umps and better for the supporters.

I think that you will find that the umpire couldn't actually see the incident as he was watching where the ball was at the time. Anyway it was a good bump.
The umpire cannot be blamed for making the wrong decision if he is in the wrong position that is only reasonable, but your next statement is simply WRONG. It was not a fair bump - it was probably not intentionally high, but there was contact to the head. That is simply a free kick at the least.

I am a (volunteer) goal umpire quite frequently here in Mackay - for the Juniors (My youngest son plays U17's for North Mackay Saints).

In my younger days I also was a field umpire and a timekeeper (in Brisbane) for the QAFL.

I know that the job is harder than it looks, but I also feel that we can get better umpiring performances than we have been recently.

The Saints - Western Bulldogs match was a farce. The umpiring errors altered the result of the match. It truly angered me to see such a disappointing performance from what are essentially highly paid professionals.

The Sydney match wasn't terrible - there were too many soft holding the ball free kicks going Sydney's way. There were also silly decisions going our way.

I do feel it is important to protect the player - especially the playmaker. That's why the Dal Santo non-decision stood out - here was basically the only guy going in for the ball (Sydney players were waiting for him to take possession then gang tackling him) and he is rewarded with a heavy collision to the head - which the umpire failed to see. Then while he is stunned, the umpire pays a free to the parasite not going for the ball.

It happens - but it should be minimised.
