Other teams may 'like' us now but we shouldn't confuse 'like' with 'feel sorry for'. I think people do have empathy for us.
Walking out of the ground on Friday night, I heard a 70-plus older St Kilda supporter say to her husband (and I quote word for word): "They are worse than ****en Collingwood supporters". She knew how bad we are and how bad we can get. She was of the vintage that would have grown up with us being the giants of the competition. She knew.
We will be the worst winners imaginable, which is not great to admit, but it's only natural considering how much emotional energy we have to let out. It's all gotta go somewhere.
Friday night was a start. Not having beaten them since 2003, I know I did a little dance on the way out of the stadium.
Don't worry Delib. Before too long, other teams' supporters will be hating us I can 100% guarantee it. Winning is not something we have been used to and we do have pretty exceptional circumstances to enjoy it when we finally are winning again.
The empathy will wear off pretty quick and they will wish we stayed in the quagmire of loserdom.
Great post!
And to those in the fold it will be happy days!! WE have paid our dues!....and then some!!

Sorry to intrude, I think the bandwagon is only coming from outside your club. I'd argue you have the least fair weather fans in the competition. For other supporters Richmond is a good football story so people are jumping on a bit. Ironically probably the same who were laying the boots in when you were down, I felt it to a smaller extent on Saturday night with Melbourne.

Agree that it comes from outside. Every club has supporters of different levels of 'faith'. We seem to bring a lot out of the woodwork when we are winning, which hasn't been often and is the reason why a lot of non-rabid supporters go into hiding. It's just human nature. Some people are 'into it' and some aren't.
It would be fair to say that most who post on BigFooty are into it.
I know a lot of people who are genuinely happy that we finally seem to be doing OK (I use the word OK, as we haven't really done anything yet). What they are yet to see is how freaking bad we can get.
The funny thing is, that I guarantee you that the bandwagon supporters will also jump off once we have started winning year after year. The novelty will wear off and they will go back to being supporters who support from their iPhone or their TV. Nothing wrong with it. But the novelty of us winning that brings the bandwagoners back, will be the very reason why they fall off again.
It sounds strange, but bandwagoners are bandwagoners and will always be bandwagoners.
I hope that kinda makes sense.

Yeah if someone labels me a bandwagon supporter after going to games and being a member my whole life (24) and never seeing sucess bar 2001 (too young in 95) then I will knock them out lol!
This sh*ts me to tears. I'm 27 and have been a member my whole life as well. I also can't remember much of 1995 so have only really seen the finals series in 2001. Doesn't stop me from going to the footy every week though.
I've heard so many opposition supporters call Richmond supporters bandwagon'ers and it just couldn't be further from the truth. Despite our lack of success over the past few decades we have still managed great crowds and fantastic membership numbers. We have almost doubled our membership base since 2003 and have finished 13th, 16th, 12th, 9th, 16th, 9th, 15th, 15th , 12th in those years. Not a bad effort for a bunch of 'bandwagon supporters'!
Despite a lot of opposition supporters jumping on, all of my Carlton, Collingwood & Essendon friends would love nothing more than to see us fall flat on our faces and fail yet again!

We would not feel happiness if we never felt sadness.

Remember that people who jump on last minute to experience the success will not enjoy it nearly as much as we will. Remember that although they might write a facebook status or put on a bumper sticker on their car and pretend to be tigers that you are the ones that will truly understand and feel the ultimate joy at the end of the day. They will feel be happy sure....but no way near the same level...and they will bring money into our club!

I was a teenager but I can remember it when we had the second biggest following in the AFL.
I can also vividly remember going to some games, like an Eagles one, and the crowd would have barely scraped 10,000.
More is better.
Jump on board.

Was that game at Princes Park? I was there for that one. There was about 8000 there that day. I think we got reamed by about 12 goals.

Well my friends are trying to join the Tiggy train, Me being an asshole to them both after saturday night might not help. They were right there to stick the boot in after GC and Port last year though so alls fair.

Listen to all of us getting ahead of ourselves.

will make for a good few months if/when we crash and burn haha. If we do a tigersplosion of bad form then the Membership-burning side of the Passion of our club will return.

The Roar is bigger at Punt Road because we have the taste of success of which there are thousands out there that have never felt.

The roar after that game was HUGE!!! The march over the bridge afterwards seeing all the devastated Saints supporters put a smile on my face. Was a helluva lot more enjoyable than flogging Hawthorn because the Saints came bloody hard at us in that last. Was so proud to be a tiger fan Friday night.

You're the same age as me. It does suck but I reckon Final Sirens had it worse. He was 10 when we last won a flag. Not sure if that actually counts. I dont think I would have appreciated it at all when I was that age.
I was actually 7 in 1980 and can't remember the flag. I do remember in '82 that my parents took me to the Royal Melbourne Show on Grand Final Day, because the crowds would be smaller, which I was a bit dirty about. They broadcast the scores over the PA and I heard Richmond lose.

Since then it's all been downhill.

It was round 18 1993 at princes park i was one of the 6025 that turned up and we lost by 19 poinys, the only othertime we played them there was in 1995 and we won by 60 - Stephen Jurica's first game.

Got a text from my good friend and closet Richmond devotee "Shane Hird" after fridays game saying that this Tiger Juggernaut was starting to scare him because he watched his 12 year son boot us home as if we were his own beloved Bombers ... and after the final siren he declared that the Tigers were now officially his second side .

I retorted that RJ's 3 game membership was in the mail .

Beware all non richmond supporters ... we are coming for your women and children :p

...and this is why bandwagon is crucial.
All my family are Collingwood or Hawthorn, but I was five at the start of the 1980 season.
Bled yellow and black since the Carlton game that year, when we pumped them in front of 85,000.

Started a new job and I was asked who I barracked for.

It was strange what happened when I replied..

The words came out easily and for some reason I didnt find myself hesitating before answering.

I had a different subject to quickly switch to but for some reason I didnt want to.

When I said Richmond, it was in my normal voice instead of that murmered voice you used as a kid to buy a packet of condoms.

Am I going through puberty again? The change was scary.

Then it got stranger, instead of ridicule they seemed to want to talk about them as if we were part of the AFL scene and offering excitement to supporters from other clubs instead of a lump clogging up the competition.

Couldn't give a fats clacker how many bandwagoners jump on board while we're up and about. The important thing is that we get them signed up as members and achieve the goal of sustained success. We do that and they will no longer be bandwagon supporters, they will be hooked for life. Its getting them locked in that will ensure that we no longer go have to go cap in hand to the supporters to get us out of trouble.

I was born in 1990, so I have never really experienced Richmond success. Except for 2001 when I cried when Brisbane knocked us out if the finals :'( (too young for 95). I believe there is always a massive engery from Richmond fans at the ground whether we play well or not. Let the bandwagoners come. They can experience the passion of the Richmond supporters which I love to be a part of every week.
