They used to have a an All Stars game in the 80's. The last one I remember was All Stars against the Bombers who were reigning Premiers. The match was played at Waverley in February, David Flood kicked 10 goals in that match, I thought he was going to be a gun FF, boy was I wrong.

We have an all-star game. it's called State of Origin.

The All-Star games in the U.S.A are meaningless affairs with no intensity, that are simply played to showcase the skills of the players. In the NBA All-Star game, there is virtually no defence.

In the AFL, we have the unique opportunity for the best players to play in a match (the state of origin) that actually means something. They are actually representing something. Now, I know people often bag the State of origin, but at it's BEST in the 80's, it was fantastic. Some of the games were among the greatest ever seen.

There is no need to have an all-star game. We arelady have the best players playing in State of Origin.

One thing we havn't seen, however, is the best 22 players in the country, all playing in the one team - the All-Australian team. How could this be done? Any ideas?

I think the only way we could get some passion into an 'All-Star' type game - from the public's POV, at least - would be playing the Vics vs the Rest. Let's face it, they all hate us!

State of Origin died with the entry of the Crows and the WCE. At that stage most of the best players from these states were playing in Adelaide and Perth, and neither club really had any substantial Victorian talent. The SA side which won on the MCG in 1993 was made up of at least half crows players....the even sang the crows theme song at the end of the game (here we go, here we go, here we go !!!)

I think this situation is changing. With the national draft increasingly the best talent in the country is moving states again. Therefore in 5 years time if we played SOO, the S.A. team for example would not simply be a blend of ADL and Port. This is what gave these games great interest in the 1980's (particularly in SA). Not only did you see the best, but the "boys came home". Importantly, in the future this would apply to Victoria as well as SA/WA so it should heighten the interest there as well.

Personally I love it.

Your right about that "no defence" type of gameplan. In the NHL All-Star game just this past weekend, the scoreline was 14-12 in favour of North America against a "world" team.

I think All-Star games are played in a more offence style partly because it's supposed to be more of an "entertainment" spectacle than a "real" game and partly because a less defensive game means less chance of injury to players playing in a "meaningless" game.
