Unfortunately a lot of teams in any ONE STATE just cannot survive (Sydney included)
That's the way of the world now.
The same thing will happen in Melbourne if it has not already started.
The new t.v. rights money will only slow the process at the moment, but a little further down the track, relocations/mergers will be on the drawing board.
There were a number of Sydney clubs in trouble financially anyway, and Souths are still not dead, they have their courtcase in May.
To me 14-16 clubs in any footy comp. is about right.
In NSW there are still a lot of teams - Easts (Roosters), Parra (EEls) Penrith (Panthers) Cronulla (Sharks) (Newcastle (Knights) and of course you have the 3 merged teams still running around and of course Souths are still in their pitching. So its not too bad, but still to us growing up with those teams....the next generations will barely notice.
Money, it seems is now running our sports, its a world-wide happening.
Cheers.

Ms Storm,

Penrith survive because they have a pokie palace the size of Chadstone Shopping centre.
Expansion of Rugby League is killing the game, remember the Perth Reds and the Adelaide whatever they were's?
Even if we accept that something as intrinsic to our cultural fabris as sport can be treated like a business we must look at a few realities.
Any sound business plan is based on maintaining your own customer base base before you expand your market share. RL has failed that and now the AFL is going down the same road.
the reason? They saw the media money and gagged. But the media have about as much morals as a cat. If footy, in whatever code, fails to attract audiences in front of TV sets, they will drop it like so much bad fish.
In a globalised world TV markets can be very volatile. A regional code needs the strength of its inherent tribalism to survive. And showbusiness clubs like Adelaide and the Melbourne Storm don't exactly inspire sacrifice.
Why should people go and buy a membership when they can sit in front of the TV and watch a game?
Someone should sit down with wayne Jackson and his pals and read them the story of The Goose That Laid The Golden Egg really slowly.
But even then I doubt they'll get it.
And in the meantime running football the way they run Telstra causes too many people too much heartache.
An old bloke at the Rob Roy Hotel in fitzroy said to us once, 'You'd have to work really hard to stuff up footy, and they are'.

Phil,
I find some of what you have written is interesting.
I also noted you were a muckraking journo.
R/l expanding was done a little too early and with no patience and committment, thats why it failed.
The Broncos, Raiders have been a success, the Cowboys will and also Warriors, will providing they get their house in order.
As for Melbourne Storm....pls. explain yourself...I did not understand your comment on them.
The Perth Reds failed because they cheated.
The Rams, were unfortunate. I still think down the track a team in Adelaide will come together again.
The Crushers too were unfortunate.
The one good thing about AFL ADMIN> is they bave committment to their interstate teams. The NRL still have a lot to learn.
However, I love rugby league also and get so sick of people saying its dying...that's internet talk and also the after affects of the War...its too good a game to disappear. Its better than Union but I still would love to see a Union team here in Melbourne and would support it also.
I love all footy codes and I think Victorians in particular tend to be very biased towards afl without exploring and appreciating other codes.
Cheers.

If you are an example of the smart thinking Victorian supporter heaven help the Vic clubs.
