Need a Royals commission into the way we’re developing these guys - too many seem to plateau or go backwards. It’s too widespread for it to be only the recruiters’ fault.

Having all of the young guys at East Perth, without some senior on field guidance, certainly would not be helping their development. A few old heads running around issuing instructions might be of benefit.

To be fair the terrible team performance is probably hampering player development and not exactly going to highlight what quality players we do have in our list. So while things are pretty terrible at the moment, i'm confident they're better than they appear on the surface and that the reserve performance will improve collectively as the next two seasons progress.

Did any of you 4 go to the wafl tonight?

Hate to say I told you so...... but ......
Sure did Inthegate. The very hard thing to interpret is actual ability because they are not playing as a team and it seems, and has seemed for a while, that they focus on KPIs, like km's covered, number of touches, etc, rather than a cohesive plan. Interestingly, one of the trainers said that the Royals boys play the game plan better than the Eagles players. I found that a very interesting comment, then I heard further comments today that made me wonder what is going on. Look at Joshwoodenspoon's post after the game, it's pretty spot on for each player. I thought McInnes, Brander, Petrucelle and Cole were good to OK. Rest were rarely sighted, in a meaningful way.
Anyway, all of that aside, I was bemused by our drafting last year, we seemed to react to outside influences like what members/supporters wanted and possibly what we thought other teams would do in the draft.
I think a number of players' time is up, but we'll see how they bounce back.

I do wonder how much the marketability of Ryan taking screamers had on our decision to prioritise drafting him
Or maybe the fact he kicked a shedload of goals in the last 2 years and we need a small forward

Greetings citizens.

With the departure of several senior players in Butler, Priddis, Mitchell and Petrie we have some serious thinking to do about our future.

With the use of Redden and Sheed in more prominent midfield roles we hopefully will not lose too much from Priddis. Mitchell had several matches of genius but was not the same old Mitchell from the Hawks.

Some of the pressure should be taken off by the return of NN and Lycett. Vardy has been solid but not great, and ideally he is depth to put pressure on Lycett.

Our inability to win clearances and generate inside fifties has hit a crisis point. We have to do everything in our power in the off season to attract either a) a genuine a Grade mid (not Wellingham Redden Jetta style) or b) a gun midfield coach

With that in mind, and knowing that the coaching staff probably still wants us to contend and won't cut to the bone, which of the underperforming senior players would you move on in the offseason:

- Lecras
- Masten
- Schofield
- Wellingham
- Hill
- Giles
- Mackenzie

And in my mind you could add Lamb, Cripps, Hutchings to that list.
For me, I'd look at cutting LeCras, Masten, Schofield and even more importantly as you said, Cripps and Hutchings. Time is up lads, hopefully the coaching staff are brave enough to make the call.

Makes you wonder wtf happened last year. Not on field but in the box and behind closed doors.

Mix wasn't right.

Priddis and Mitchell together is two slow blokes who are useless in transition. Which means Redden (who played 19 of 24 ) is played out of position, Yeo plays almost exclusively in defence, we try and use Masten and Sheed as half forwards... Etc.

2018 was a combination of the better mix people were hoping for and said mix clicking immediately. A lot spoken about the new midfield, Mitchell's coaching influence, Redden's return to form, Yeo's move to the middle etc. but our new 7 man forward rotation was just as important. Waterman played a part early on but really he's the extra tall we don't yet need.

Kennedy, Darling, LeCras, Cripps - all there in 2017.
Rioli, Ryan, Venables - all new in 2018.

Kennedy missed half the year but was himself when we really needed him. Last quarter of the QF, first half of the PF, and the GF. Boom.
Darling turned into Wayne Carey, then got injured, then came back Jack Darling again. Career best season, pro rata.
LeCras had his moments but everyone knows he's past his best. A bottom 6 player now, but still would have topped Essendon's goal kicking.
Cripps has always been a hard worker, but he's not flashy. Got career high disposals and inside 50s, and in the end goals. See below
Rioli and Ryan. Do the things Cripps can't, don't do the things he can as well. 48 goals between two first year players, one of whom missed half the year. They've released Cripps to push up the ground more and move the ball in quickly.
Venables didn't really do 2/5 of FA but he's clean. Watch him in the first half Melbourne annihilation. Viney fumble Oliver fumble Brayshaw fumble Venables one touch.

I’d cut just LeCras and Masten out of the regulars. Schofield is deapth but only because we need to have youth as a priority.
