Re: Gaff, do you think that with losing Priddis and Mitchell from the midfield, that throwing away Gaff is going to hold us in good stead? Are you secretly but un-admittedly a Dockers person at heart? Was Damien Drum or Cameron Schwab your Godfather? Seriously mate, at a footy club, there is a core of senior players who keep the ball rolling, and if we get rid of Gaff, we go into ladder free fall. Sheed is on his way, but isn't there yet. Duggan was basically a spectator against the Giants. You'd need a pretty cluey plan to stock up the midfield from what is a pretty average group of young mids if you want to go down the get-rid-of-Gaff path

Gaff is what is stopping us from free fall?

Seriously?

Have you seen him play this year?

He's a free agent at the 2018 too...

As I said in the other thread:

Retired
- Priddis, Mitchell, Butler, Petrie, LeCras, Brophy
Delisted - Giles, Hill, Masten, McInnes, Tunbridge?
WAFL until form dictates otherwise (not holding my breath) - Cripps, Hutchings
Last chance - Gorter, Mutimer, Schofield, Wellingham, Lamb? (because we can't delist them all)
On the trade table (if the price is right) - Gaff, Darling (both worth in the range of pick 8 - 14)
2018 big year for - Sheed, Venables, Rioli, Karpany, Waterman

Pretty significant suggested changes.
7 players off the main list and 4 off the rookie list.
The key will be to get 7 players to replace the players going out on the main list.
If we don't think we can do that then players like Masten and LeCras may remain on our list next year.

Hurn will go into the midfield for periods next season ....too many half backs we need to utilise and Hurn is not getting younger is 30 evidently so some free time playing midfield might be good for his career without the captaincy . Wellingham or Watson or Nelson could play half back .

Out

Hill
Priddis
Mitchell
Petrie
Giles
Tunbridge
McInnes
Butler

Trade options

Masten
Lamb
Gaff
Mutimer

Started career there just my opinion for a while , we have so many half backs to utilise .

Hurn was at a few centre bounces in Q4 yesterday just my opinion but DC said the same thing the other day so my opinion is validated ...so There :straining: !!!

He made a big difference didn't he.

The is no chance Le cras is being kept as depth. Simpson has made it abundantly clear in his tenure that if Le Cras is on our list, he plays, irrespective of all form and logic.

If he doesn't retire, and isnt injured, watch for him to play every senior game. If Simpson hasnt been willing to send him to the WAFL at any point over the past 2 seasons, i cant see him starting now.

We all best get used to seeing the frenchman again in 2018

I hate how players are 'selfish' and sign contracts that are offered to them. Just so selfish.

I think some people are reading too much into Simpson's words. With 4 retirements, plus a couple of delistings the team make-up is going to be quite different in 2018 without the club actually taking any real action again.

Senior List

Delist:
Giles

Trade/1 Year Deal:
Schofield
Hill
Wellingham
MacKenzie

Trade:
Masten
Gaff (If he wants to go home)

Retirees:
Mitchell
Priddis
Butler

Rookie List

Delist:
McInnes
Tunbridge

Retirees:
Petrie

One of the few realistic posts in this thread.

A couple of asute posters have made the point.

Its fine to cut deep but what are the replacements?

If there were 20 better footballers we could pick we would cut 20.

But there isn't.

We only have 4 decent draft picks, after that its very hit and miss.
Its all going to depend on what trades they can get done.

How have we wasted them? We made a GF two years ago and those very good players weren't up to it. Not every very good player has team success, that's just the way the cookie crumbles in professional sport.
I didn't mean to say that their careers have been a waste, just that with the great key position players we've had over the last 10 years we should really have been able to win a GF or two. Unfortunately not being able to put a decent enough midfield to surround them has meant that we've been unable to, I'd call it a waste of having so much tall talent in one team.

We've been spoilt by first a centreline of Mainwaring/Kemp/Matera, and then Judd/Cousins/Kerr.

We may never reach those heights again and maybe I am settling for mediocrity but we have to make do with what we've got. Naitanui and Shuey surrounded by B graders.

Probably not enough though, we legitimately have the worst midfield in the league.

The good thing is there are always plenty of decent mids available - you always need a bit of luck to get the true A graders though and being here in Perth makes it difficult to attract the elite unless they are from WA. I wonder if we could throw a shitload at Coniglio to get him to come home.

I'd rather be in our position than Freo's - a better midfield but problems at either end of the ground.

It's a real shame we weren't able to lure Coniglio back early on in his career, would have solved a lot of our problems.
Freo's biggest problem is their crap recruitment, not sure why they thought getting a bunch of 3rd tall forwards in was a good idea and their drafting of talls is as bad as our midfield drafting.

And Cox to the second list, and no I don't expect to ever see that concentration of talent there again.

Greetings citizens.

With the departure of several senior players in Butler, Priddis, Mitchell and Petrie we have some serious thinking to do about our future.

With the use of Redden and Sheed in more prominent midfield roles we hopefully will not lose too much from Priddis. Mitchell had several matches of genius but was not the same old Mitchell from the Hawks.

Some of the pressure should be taken off by the return of NN and Lycett. Vardy has been solid but not great, and ideally he is depth to put pressure on Lycett.

Our inability to win clearances and generate inside fifties has hit a crisis point. We have to do everything in our power in the off season to attract either a) a genuine a Grade mid (not Wellingham Redden Jetta style) or b) a gun midfield coach

With that in mind, and knowing that the coaching staff probably still wants us to contend and won't cut to the bone, which of the underperforming senior players would you move on in the offseason:

- Lecras
- Masten
- Schofield
- Wellingham
- Hill
- Giles
- Mackenzie

And in my mind you could add Lamb, Cripps, Hutchings to that list.

agree with just about all of that but why cut lamb he has been played out of position as a kp player when he is natural winger all because he grew 2cm still to short to be a genuine kp but thats simmos coaching not lamb. when put back on a wing his form improved greatly on the cusp of selection just ran out of time ep didnt play finals. his problem has always been simmo playing him out of position trying to make him something he is not a kp. give him a run on the wing permanently and he'll get selected

Not at AFL level. He hasnt had a go in defense but he basically has done nothing anywhere else. List clogger

plays fine on wing just not a full forward. a player being played out of position definitely not the eagles mo

Lamb can be called many things but "list clogger" shouldn't be one of them :sheep:

For starters his WAFL form is decent, secondly he's a tall so they should be given longer to develop and bloom, thirdly there is the fact he doesn't appear to have a set position as yet... i campaigned as all hell last off season for WCE to start using him in defense, didn't eventuate.

Fourthly he's only young and there are plenty of older spuds with less upside around him still on the list (Marsden, Hutchings, Mcinnes, Tunners)

And fifthly, if he was at any other club i think he would have an opportunity to show his wares at AFL level by now. But because Darling is untouchable, despite poor form and JK is JK, he is destined for the WAFL for the rest of his life unless he has a month of 30 disposal, 5 goal games and manages to cure AIDS.
