How deep can we cut?

No amount of cutting is going to help more than a soft favourable draw, I think we need to think long and hard about the last 2 premierships and tank for a season or 2. We simply aren't getting the quality players leaving GWS or GCS to top up like the Victorian teams have. Our list would be capable with a very easy draw and some luck which seems to be the bigger influence, Richmond are the same team apart from a couple of new rookies and Caddy. I swear our list is as good if not better this year than theirs, granted we don't have a Dusty but he and Danger are one of a kind.
Also next year as we ended in the top 6 at seasons end will mean we will be playing the other top 6 teams and playing one (possibly two) of them twice so we are in for a bit of pain next year?

Throwing away years with a fit NN is tantamount to treason. Our midfield next year will be no more or less pedestrian than in 2015 and look where we were then.
Unfortunately Nic can't do it on his own (with a bit of help from JK, Shuey, Gov & Yeo). Unless a couple of the young guns step up in a fashion beyond expectations.

We made a grand final with a midfield of NN, Priddis, Shuey and Gaff. My point is, if NN regains his form (no guarantees, of course), who's to say we can't challenge with a midfield of NN, Shuey, Gaff, Redden and Sheed?

Tanking is easy, it's stopping tanking that's hard. How much do you want to risk spending the next decade as the new Melbourne or Carlton.

Playing not to win, playing players out of position and taking your best players off if you get too close is tanking

Playing young guys and desperately trying to win but coming up short isnt tanking.

Im surprised that i actually have to tell you this distinction.

Time will tell I guess. One can only try. I'm hoping that Venables will bring a bit of speed into the midfield, even if he plays part half forward and the other half midfield - hoping he can stay fit?

At least now we can rotate the midfield after all these years

McGuiness, Karpany, Mutimer, Lamb, snadden, bayok, watson

I'd bet cutting all of the above prior to masten and Wellingham.

They've either had enough time to prove themself or not up to it.

At least masten and Wellingham offer us some depth.

Thankfully you're not our list manager then. Masten and Wellingham have had plenty of time to show how crap they are.

And the sad thing is, no matter how crap they are they're better than any of the other 7 will ever be.

We have big problems with the quality of our youngsters.

We already lack depth so we are going to cull two of our depth players, who no matter how much you disagree are serviceable at AFL level.

I don't disagree with you on the quality of our young players but at this point Masten and Wellingham offer us next to nothing and would just be clogging up the list. Besides that Watson has shown plenty, Lamb has been played out of position and too early to call on Bayok and Snadden. Mutimer probably not going to be more than a depth player

Guys like Masten and Wellingham also aren't the problem with our current position.

It's the lack of quality and depth on the playing list.

We need to keep whatever depth we have but improve the quality of our 18-22 year olds.

I see our biggest problem is that we have too many players that are clearly never going to make it.

This means no pressure on the best 22 and lacklustre performances.

Keep masten and Wellingham and at least there's pressure on redden, Hutchins, partington, Nelson to perform.

Get rid of them and we will see a drop in the performance of the above, because let's face it, karpany, McGuiness, bayok, Watson, snadden, mutimer are never going to put long term pressure on the best 22 for their spot.

If we lose depth our troubles will only worsen.

But in one sentence you say you want to get rid of players who aren't good enough and then in the next say you want to keep two players who aren't good enough. Who cares what age they are, why keep players who have proven they no longer have what it takes. At least some of those young guys have the potential to improve and become best 22

Let's be honest all of them will be gone in two years time. Thing is, masten and Wellinghams output will be better for us for another two years than any two of the other players.

I know you mentioned about potential, but age and potential are two different things, and just because they are young, doesn't mean they have potential.

If we had youngsters that had shown a bit I'd completely agree with you.

Unfortunately we don't.

Seriously? Bayok and Watson are still very raw you can't expect them to transform
Into hardened footballers in one season. Mutimer, karpany and snadden have a season or two still to prove themselves. I'll
Be fine with losing McInnes though

Karps just resigned, Bayok has only had the one season as a cat-B, and Watson is a potential beaut that we should be patient with until physically ready for the demands of AFL (had some injuries this year)

Their names shouldn't be up.

Watson is a very exciting prospect, he may or may not make it, but he has plenty of potential, probably more than the others mentioned. Even Bayok is worth persevering with for a little while longer as he is also a cat B rookie. They are not even taking up a normal rookie spot, so we will definitely take more time with them.

I thought some had mentioned that Watson does show some talent?

You went too easy on what I suspect is a troll account liam123. I would have asked who the hell is McGuiness?
