How diabolical is our midfield?

Our development of our midfielders is poor. Why do we continue to draft midfielders and then go and play them anywhere but in the midfield.

Edwards - drafted as a potential big inside midfielder but we continue to play him across half back in the sanfl.
Dowling - inside mid who has been played outside mid role all year.
Smith - years ago was drafted as a midfielder and yet never really ever played that role for his whole AFL career.
Milera - i know injuries got him but like smith never really given much time to play midfield.
pedlar- drafted as inside midfielder and yet we hardly even played him in the midfield in the sanfl.
Taylor - midfielder who until tonight continued to be played in no man's land across half forward.
Draper - midfielder who nicks was scared to give decent playing time during his AFL games. How many games was he sub or play across half forward?
Rachele- was the best under 16s player in Australia as a midfielder in that particular year and yet we hardly see him there.

And yet watching the sanfl how many times did we watch the top up players playing in the midfield instead of our drafted AFL players. Add to that they play Murphy in the midfield when he is never going to play that role at AFL level.

The other thing i have noticed is that our midfielders are more worried about there opposition midfield opponents than just hunting the ball themselves. Draper.this year was the classic example

Next year I want to see Curtin, Draper,Edwards and rachele running through our midfield. Get some pace into our midfield.

Berry,Jones,Schoenberg,Murphy are not the answer.

THIS!!!!!!

If we are in for bailey and somehow got him, maybe as part of the midfield rebuild we run both rankine and rachele as primary mids. Get them into the midfield group day 1 preseason. Add draper, edwards and curtin in there and with dawson, make that the main group and be prepared to allow it to develop even if it means we regress a bit while it does develop

Enough pissing around the edges bringing in non mids then expecting other players to magically become mids.

Even Dawson and Rankine were not mids when we recruited them.

We need to go out and get a genuine midfielder who has played and will continue to play midfield and only midfield

We’ve had some golden years, where the midfield was our strength:

2005: Roo, Goodwin, McLeod, Edwards, Thompson. This was peak
2015: Danger, Sloane, B Crouch, Thompson, Van Berlo. Another good era

2025: Average at best. Only that could be held in the same regard as the other 2 eras, is Dawson. And Rankine if you count his part time midfield role.

The coaches reluctance to rotate some more players through there at both AFL and even SANFL level are going to become massive issues as we try to move forward.

Unless we can bring in an established mid during the trade period then again we’re relying on the players this year who couldn’t get it done or by finally bringing in some of the kids who will be inconsistent in their performances - a trait that Nicks hates

State out of midfield:

Chayce: Could’ve got Butters. Got a plodding d grader instead
Ned McHenry: Retired Fisherman
Berry: 12 possession a game midfielder
M Crouch: Retired, and been serving up junk since 2017.
Curtain: Our only hope
Dawson: Only good midfielder we have
Sogligo: Good in spurts, never been consistently fit. Running at 60% due to this
Peatling: Had some good games, but generally vanilla avg mid.
Cummings: the same as above, but avg wingman
Laird: shouldn’t be in the mid rotation anymore. Liability when we had him and crouch in there
Scholl: would be okay if afl was non contact
Sid: still a kid. Need to get games into him
Dowling: wouldn’t know, we don’t play him, and he wastes away in sanfl
Schoenberg: Was potentially something there, but never really got going. He should’ve been a key mid by now.
Taylor: Been playing him as hhf. Maybe a b grade mid in we pump 100 games into him
Rankine: comes to save our mid things turn to shit, so often

I daresay the club were targetting NWM as a replacement half back flank for Laird/Milera and not a midfielder too

What’s clear it’s absolutely pointless drafting for the midfield, we can’t develop them, has to be via trade.

Rankine has to play midfield.
Pedlar given a preseason as a mid.

If we can bring in Bailey or Oliver, ideally both, a midfield of Dawson, Rankine, Bailey and Oliver is a shit loads better than what we are running with. Curtin and Draper to get significant midfield time in the rotations.

Peatling becomes our hard tagger.
Soligo to the wing.
Cumming back.

Immediately a 5 goal better side IMO, and thats scary.

Who can we realistically get to help our midfeild? Oliver seems the one that we could actually get but do we go there? Bailey would be great but can't see the lions letting him go. Obvious as anything that we need to add a genuine mid to be anywhere near close to contending
