Cast your mind back a few years to when the Crows were up and running and challenging. Ken Hinkley was clinging to his job and everyone poured derision on Port's list management strategy.

Now it looks like Port were on the right track, no? And Adelaide were kidding themselves? Is that over-simplifying it?

I reckon there must be a lot of Adelaide fans who at the end of 2017 assumed they were in much better shape than Port. Not unreasonably. What went wrong?

Adelaide didn't read the writing on the wall after Richmond won the flag and thought that their system of playing three talls that couldn't take a contested mark would still be relevant in the modern game of forward pressure - especially after signing Jenkins on a long term deal. They thought the Tigers winning was an aberration and more about the mental fragility of their players rather than any failure in terms of their football, which is why they did that stupid camp and went after Gibbs a year too late, wasting draft picks in the process.

Then they messed up again at the end of 2018 by doubling down on this complete misreading of their predicament by targeting players to assist their current list like McHenry and Jones instead of just going for the best available talent like Butters and Duursma, who would walk into Adelaide's best 22 and easily be in their top 10-15 players at the moment.

Port have had the list to make finals nearly every year that Hinkley has coached

we have been known to be mentally weak and inconsistent, this year we have been consistent

add in some good drafting with SPP, Marshall, Houston, Ladhams, Rozee, Butters, Duursma, Woodcock, georgiades (Bergman- pick 14 last year also looks a gem) in recent years.

Crows had all the momentum leading up to the GF, but the blew it and all we seen is mismanagement since. Unfortunately their at the start of their rebuild. Attack the draft, play the kids

Port's drafting and development have been superior on all counts.

Crows are a rabble and have no system - their oldest/best players are injury prone - there is limited opportunity for development of any talent they do have.

Port
2016: Marshall Powell-Pepper, Atley, Drew, Ladhams
2017: Hayes (205cm) Farrell, Patmore Garner
2018: Connor Rozee (5), Zak Butters (12), Xavier Duursma (18), Riley Grundy (73), Boyd Woodcock (76)

Crows:
2016: Gallucci, Poholke, Himmelberg
2017: Fogarty, McPherson, Wilson, Murphy
2018: Chayce Jones (9), Ned McHenry (16), Will Hamill (30), Lachlan Sholl (64)

Well if we are casting our minds back a few years Adelaide went all in on a flag at the expense of development. Then basically imploded off-field.

Port built steadily toward finals, nailed a couple of drafts, developed their youth and here we are.

It really isn't rocket science. Port are now clearly in a window and Adelaide are rebuilding.

Can't wait for the 2025 edition of this dumb* thread where we can reverse the roles.

Oh and by the way considering Adelaide have now been overtaken by literally everyone the thread Adelaide's Decline basically covers most of whatever you want to know about, well, Adelaide's decline.

In 2025 all the players we have drafted in the last couple of years will be 24-27 and hopefully in their prime. Will take longer then that for the crows to rebuild

Okay well cool crystal ball gazing.

I daresay if we went back to 2015 you wouldn't have predicted the current situation.

Anything can happen.

Lets do the pair and compare

2018 AFL Draft
Pick 9 - Chayce Jones
Pick 16 - Ned McHenry
Pick 30 - Will Hammill
Pick 64 - Lachlan Sholl

Pick 5 - Connor Rozee
Pick 12 - Zak Butters
Pick 18 - Xavier Duursma
Pick 73 - Riley Grundy
Pick 76 - Boyd Woodcock

I don’t even think those Crows kids are that bad. Jones and McHenry probably don’t live up to their picks considering the players around them but will be handy players. Hamill and Sholl seem like good value.

That’s not to say they’re up to the Port few but the problems seem more cultural to me. Need to get rid of the boys club.

Simple really.
Port have a very good list management and recruiting team. They have an eye for talent and make the big plays they need to.
Just look at them moving on Wingard.
One of the issues you have making a play like that is backlash from the other players by looking disloyal. It almost backfired with Hartlett, but Wingard wasnt a popular player at Port, so no players gave a toss he left.
They got Burton and Duursma with that move.
They made the moves to go past the Crows in the draft to get Rozee, while Hamish was too busy trying to promote Tasmanian kids than go hard at the best group of SA talent in years.

Port has always had a tight group of players, and even when they were in the Primus years, they didnt lose many stars.
The Crows on the other hand don't have that same level of player welfare that Port does.

But make no bones about it, things will change. And the difference is when Port went through a period like this they almost folded. The Crows will weather that storm easily unlike Port who will always be fighting for survival. They are the North Melbourne of SA.

Actually, we've been going all in to fall into the 8 at the expense of development for over a decade. Then imploded off-field.

We didn't tie our players up naked to trees, reference dead siblings to still grieving players, offer to wife share like a pack of beta cucks or basically s**t on our players indigenous heritage. You can basically apply this to any other club though.

Port Adelaide overtook the Crows by realising there's 16 other teams in the national league, and that in-state and interstate rivalries don't really mean s**t when most of your players are from different states and territories anyway.

Getting hung up on getting or missing out on "home grown talent", or caring less about keeping up with a "cross-town rival" is just antiquated and backward thinking.
