Would love to see posters theories, opinions and statistics based analysis on how to defeat Richmond this week. I think this will be a classic with a close result at hand so coaching tactics, structure, player selection and individual acts of brilliance (or not) as well as players simply performing their role (or not) will all factor in deciding the result.

10 questions I have are-
Should we play a spare in defence?
What can we take and use from last weeks game, if anything?
We have the premier ruckman in the competition and are equal 4th for hitouts but not capitalise on this and be slightly below average in clearances (NMFC average 38.6 per game. AFL average 38.7 per game).
How can we change this?
Richmond rank 2nd last in the competition in tackles how can North Melbourne exploit this?
Who are the key Richmond players and how should we try to nullify their impact?

Richmond have greatly improved defensively this year- what are their defensive structures and how do the players break them down?
How do the coaching staff ensure that the rested players don't come out flat like they did after the bye against Gold Coast?
Which of our players pose matchup problems for the Tigers?
How much time should Zeibel play forward?
Who should be sub?

In my opinion, NMFC will win this final comprehensively if they can achieve all of the following;
1. Win the contested possession count
2. Restrict the influence of Deledio and Martin. Hopefully restrict them both goal-less.
3. Force the Tigers to put the ball in the hands of Newman, Lennon, Lambert and Lloyd as many times as possible
4. If Petrie, Brown and Waite cant mark the ball they must force a contest and not be worked under the high ball

Do not give them an inch in their defensive half and work hard at covering the outlets and blocking space for 30 meter kicks to shirt leads. Force them to kick long to contests and bring put good users like Harvey, Higgins and Dal Santo into the game in an attacking sense. Work through their weakest defensive match-up when we have the ball.

Above all deny them space and if we can't run hard defensively to clog our D50.

We pretty much ran with a solid platform last Friday. What we lacked was class moving forward.

Their forwards like space and at the G it will be hard to lock that down so we need to make sure we pressure the ball carrier. They are quite happy to direct forward entries through mids so we can't all be about the talls up forward. We too need to make sure we lower our eyes as we have several goal kicking options that aren't over 6 foot four.

And as B Tron said, denying the easy kick is paramount. If they kick long, we can defend better than if we are chasing tail all night.

The other key, have an outlier at all stoppages. We get drawn into the contest far too easily so we need some that will pressure their runners if the ball comes loose.

This is why we can not play a spare man in defense. When ever we do we get burnt on the rebound.

If we want to beat them we need to remind them that:
- Tigers forwards have always been the definition of sooks,
- Martin and Cotchin him are considered the two most vain players in the AFL, and
- their whole team goes missing in September!

I see what you did there.

1. Clearances
2. Stop one of Martin/Deledio
3. Defensive Pressure from Turner, Garner, Nahas, Thomas (whoever plays)
4. If our triple towers can mark the ball inside 50, from good ball users (harvey, higgins, nds, wells??)

Win our share of clearances.

Apply defensive pressure in our forward half.

These 2 deny Deledio and Martin supply, set up turnovers and repeat entries.

They are fairly safe and slow coming from the back half.

The monkey is on their back, so best get the pressure on them early.

Lots of uncontsted possessions will do lots of marks hold onto the ball and look for leads simply :)

Fine tune our jumper punching technique, a few 50m penalties wouldn't go astray

Scenario 1: Lindsay Thomas jumper punches Cotchin

Dermott Brereton "Heehee when he's not diving he's breaking the rules trying to get a kick. They need to give Cotchin a 50 and report Lindsay to stamp this kind of thing out of the game"

Scenario 2: Dustin Martin jumper punches Gibson

Dermott Brereton "Haha what's great is watching this kid he's just such a exu.exu. 'exuberaling' player when he gets going and nothing wrong with that, teehee, bit of spirit to get his team going and you can really see he lifts his team with that kind of effort and you know what he's put Sam Gibson right off his game too teehee"

1. Stop us from taking too many uncontested marks. NM have a good record of doing that.
  • We only won that count 89-81 last week.
  • When we smashed Collingwood we won the count 144-78.
  • When we smashed Gold Coast we won the count 116-84.
  • When we beat Hawthorn we won the count 98-56.
  • When we beat Fremantle we won the count 85-45.
  • When Adelaide beat us THEY won the uncontested mark count 78-68.
  • When West Coast beat us THEY won the uncontested mark count 101-78.
  • When North Melbourne beat us in Round 6 you won the count 95-71.

That's it. Simply as that, if you do that, you'll win.
