I still get confused how the finals system works, could somone please explain it to me :)

Lets just say the ladder how it is now stays the same (big chance it wont) but just for the sake of things.

1.Geelong
2.Knageroos
3.hawthorn
4.Port Adelade
5.West Coast
6.Collingwood
7.Sydney
8.Brisbane

How would things pan out?

How would things pan out?

geelong v port - (winners through to prelim)
kang v hawthorn

wc v brisbane - (losers out)
coll v syd

geelong v port winners through to prelim
kang v hawthorn

wc v brisbane losers out
coll v syd
Semi Finals
Port V WCE
Roos V Coll

Prelim Finals
Geelong V Collingwood
Hawthorn V Port

GF
Geelong V Hawthorn

PS - Kooley can you crack some more Jordan McMahon and Brad Johnson jokes. Their gold!

1.Geelong
2.Kangaroos
3.Hawthorn
4.Port Adelade
5.West Coast
6.Collingwood
7.Sydney
8.Brisbane

#1 Cats v Power, Roos v Hawks (winners get a bye and advance to preliminary finals.

#2 Eagles v Lions, Pies v Swans (losers eliminated, winners advance to play losers of #1)

Assuming Cats, Hawks, Lions and Swans win....

#3 Bye: Cats, Hawks.
#4 Semi Finals: Roos v Lions, Power v Swans (the highest placed loser from #1 plays the lowest ranked winner from #2...ie, Roos [highest placed: 2] vs Lions [lowest ranked: 8].

Losers of #4 are eliminated.

Assuming Lions and Power win....

#5 Preliminary: Cats v Lions, Hawks v Power (again, highest placed team plays lowest ranked team).

Losers of #5 eliminated, winners advance to grand final.

Assuming Lions and Power win...

#6 Grand Final: Brisbane vs Port Adelaide.

Winner of Grand Final crowned best team in Australia....in this case, it would be Port Adelaide.

....as easy as that!....for example.:)

The only flaw in your finals system Aristotel is that there's A>An all Vic Grand Final, and B>Collingwood winning a GF should they make it.

If I was you, Nubby, I'd ignore that last example as blatant misrepresentation of how a Finals would work.

Clearly mine was far more realistic...even if still day-dreaming, it's got more credibility than Aristotels!

Yours had Brisbane beating the Eagles in the first week of the finals.
Credibility gone.

And Sydney would have no chance of beating Collingwood, doesn't matter where we play them, we would win.

Fremantle beat Eagles. Anything's possible come finals.
And Swans are always gonna be a tricky team to beat for ANY team.

Richmond usually finish 9th and miss out.
Demons play finals depending on odd or even year.
Carlton add to there to draft picks
Pies usually exit first round and Mick keeps his job for another year
Adelaide make the prelims but get rooted by WC
Swans sneak up and make the GF against WC

Toss of the coin decides WC/Swans winner.

Thats usually how finals work lately.

If there was two teams i would be 100% confident of beating in a final it would be Sydney and Adelaide.

I'm still pissed at the Swans choking in the '03 prelim, cost us a premiership.

Then, considering that Richmond and Melbourne both end up at the bottom, then that would suggest this years finals picture ends up entirely off-script.

Ie, a 6th-8th team winning the Grand Final. #1 team choking in finals. Port winning going 3-0 in a finals campaign. Or even an all-Vic grand final. BUT...not that wacky that Collingwood could win one! No way.

Don't Brisbane have a bit of wood over Eagles at the moment?
Cwood do usually beat out the interstaters in finals, bar Grand Finals.

If we take Nubby's final 8, ok, to be 100% legit...Gee v Port, we could win that at the G. If Geelong has a panic attack. But they're so on fire, stand out from the rest of the 44 point teams at the moment, that they might canter in. However, there's a lot of 44 teams there that could give them a run for their money still.
Cwood most likely will beat Sydney (thank God no more Swans finals to watch). But end up losing to a Vic side in week 2 (as they're accustomed to). This would be Kangaroos or Hawthorn....what's your record lately against them?

Pies out in 2. Port out in 3 (drop 1 win 1) or all the way.

I was under the misunderstanding that it was something like ....

Finals round 1 (8 left)

[1] 1v4
[2] 2v3
[3] 5v8 (loser eliminated)
[4] 6v7 (loser eliminated)

Finals Round 2 (6 left)

W[1] bye
W[2] bye

[5] L[1] v W[3] (loser eliminated)
[6] L[2] v W[4] (loser eliminated)

Finals Round 3 (4 left)

[7] W[1] v W[5] (loser elimated)
[8] W[2] v W[6] (loser elimated)

Grand Final (2 left)

W[7] v W[8] (loser feels worse than all the previous losers)

How does it actually work then?

btw are we still on the MCG plan or is it higher placed team at end of round 22 gets the home final option (baring the GF of course).

You're dreamin'!

I was just helping out the thread starter explaining how finals work. I can't help it if Port Adelaide wins another flag.

I don't think anyone could help Port Adelaide win another flag this year

You could help first week of finals by having a panic attack.

But the big one will be the preliminary final for Geelong, especially if after a bye week. The pressure will be HUGE.
