Analysis How do we score?

Gallucci looks like he has the ability to play a true small forward role. I think he could sneak a couple goals a game à la Puopolo. But will he get a chance?
In terms of talls, my hopes are on CC and Jaksch, but not sure how much impact they can have this year.
Midfielders will help. Graham's good for a goal or 2 here and there and Murphy is an underrated forward imo.

after 1 game ...Gallucci has become a favourite of mine and i'm sure a favourite of many others , the way he carrys himself on the field , the confidence he shows in himself ..it to me reminds of the way Eddie Betts was before MM arrived , he must be in our best 22 , and with Casboult they could make each others game much better..

How many nominated rookie slots do we have this year?

We can't play Byrne and Gallucci at the same time if we only have the one nominated rookie slot... unless we have a serious LTI and need to promote someone.

Bulldogs don't have dominate big forwards but play exciting high scoring football. Hawks have won the last three flags getting rid of Buddy and Roughead playing more like a mobile mid/fwd. They rarely have more than 4 players inside the forward half. The modern game is about winning the ball and hanging on to it. Midfielders are more the key than ever. I thought WCE were better last year when they lost some bigger players in the pre season. Casboult as a marking option but the movement of our smalls and midsizes will be the key. I actually don't see it as a big issue.

This. Hawthorn's forward line is so good because of the ball movement from the kicks into the f50...then it's all about movement and finding space..

Puopolo, rioli and breust, then you have mobile big guys in roughed and gunston..with ruckman like hale rotating..No 'power' forwards.

Would be happy to see a forward line of casboult, Everitt, walker, lamb and gallucci/Smith... With rotating krooz.

The Hawthorn blueprint seems very relevant for us but we lack the quality of course. Casboult should play the bailout role and we can surround him with our mobile talls/crumbing small-medium types.
Our midfielders will need to help too and the goalkicking capabilities of Murphy, Thomas, Gibbs and Kreuzer will have to be utilised.
Conventional wisdom says the kids will take a while, they'll develop but will take a few seasons.

i can see us lining up w casboult then everitt/walker and possibly jaksch. they will be supported by smith/wright and the midfielders pushing forward

Surprised nobody has mentioned Cripps. Just needs to improve his kicking. Took a few grabs inside 50
last season and didn't capitalise. Provides a point of difference with our rotating mids. Murphy, Gibbs.
definitely Kerridge, Thomas, Graham and Wright can all hit the scoreboard. Lamb was not recruited as a pun motivator for this board. Walker is a proven goalkicker if he can stay on the park, as is Everitt.

Levi the prime tall target, should contribute between 30-50 providing we can spread defences with other options. The ruck recruits and Kreuzer hopefully providing around two a game. Then we have the great white hopes Harry, Charlie and Jack to get blocks of games and hopefully fly under the radar.

So many talking Jaksch, who has trained exclusively back, but you never know if Bolts has the same "high" opinion most of us have of Jones, he may change tack. I still have hopes of Foster providing an option with maturity, but his lack of opportunity may suggest otherwise. Gallucci may prove an inspired rookie selection in time as well.

Not too many teams rely on one player kicking a bag anymore. It will be more about system and workrate to provide opportunity.

I think we will have a lot of problems kicking a winning score but just like our coach I will be looking for small sprouts. As for Cripps I think he will kick at least 20 goals this year because he strikes me as a young man who won't rest on his laurels and will continue his stellar rise. He will be top 20 in the AFL by the end of the year.

In all seriousness though, I think with Cripps Murphy and Kreuzer back we should at least improve our forward 50 entries by at least 24.67%.

Keep it simple stupid.

Kick the ball long into the forward line, fight for the contested ball if Casboult, Walker, Everitt or a youngster fails to take a grab and outwork the opposition.

so let me get this straight. We should sack the CEO because he allowed us to field a team down heavily on quality in a practice match. Then we expect these fringe players to 1. be able to create the sort of ball movement into the F50 that allows us to score 2. be able to take advantage of such slim pickings when they did arise.
Here's a suggestion- why dont we wait until the season starts and our best team is playing? Lets assess it once we have seen our new structure at work in earnest. I agree that it is not necessary to have a power forward to score, or I should say it is not the only way. A lot of big forwards these days are playing further up the ground so that they can play that link player that helps with the transition out of defence- they are not taking the big pack marks in the F50 necessarily.

Midfield competence and delivery will help a lot and will still haven't seen our full strength midfield. Obviously our actual forward options aren't stellar but the midfield can go a long way to helping with it.

Your best forward line in my opinion

HF: Murphy Jaksch Everitt
FF: Walker Casboult Kerridge

I think you need to go with that for at least 5-6 rounds before drastically changing it. You should also have Thomas playing more as a forward every year you keep him and guys like Gibbs, Graham and Cripps rotating through

I think we can have a look at Western Bulldogs from a number of years ago and go with a mobile quick forward line with Casboult as our main tall. Perhaps we could have a look at something like:

HF: Kerridge Casboult Graham
FF: Everitt Walker Wright

If Jaksch can find some form we can slot him in up there, or we can swing Rowe forward and use KJ down back. This year will be free hit for us, and Bolts can really just teach the team how he wants them to play and try to get some system in the way we play.

midfield will be cripps murphy gibbs kerridge graham whiley thomas cuningham curnow curnow wright. its solid but lacks real elite quality. cripps is by far our best and is still young.

forward line of casboult jaksch/everitt walker smith supported by midfield might be our best bet.

long way to go to build a top 4 side but i still believe we are on the right track
