How does a players salary work?

I'm sure that injured players get match payments, but do they only get this if injured during a game, or if they were in the starting 22 the prior week and injured themselves at training, or if they drop a safe on their foot?

They wouldn't get paid if they injured themself doing something that wasn't in any way football-related. The training thing is an interesting one though.

are bonuses awarded by the club done within the salary cap or not?

I reckon that is the question being posed by the opening post.

I always assumed that the players' contracts were worked out on the basis of the most money that might be earned, including awards. So that would mean if Travis Cloke is on 400k per annum that would be the maximum, but if he doesn't tick every box in terms of playing, incentives etc, he may earn 370k.

But given St Kilda found themselves with cap issues, I assume that maybe that's not the case. You don't suddenly discover the wages bill doesn't add up part way through the year. It must be up to clubs to guess what the TPP might add up to with unexpected contingencies, as also appears to have happened with Freo and their horror injury run and unexpected match payments for players not ancitipated to play in 2011.

Oh, and [strike] Pablo Escobar [/strike] Matthew Stokes will accept vials.

When you hear a players wage quoted as say, $400k, that'll be base plus 22 match payments. Or in some cases they're simply paid a wage whether they play or not. It generally won't include bonuses or incentives.

It's also usually a bit of a guess, noone really knows except player, manager and club.

I love the fact that no-one in this thread knows squat, and is just guessing.

I was referring to match payments for injured players, not their base salary. Or are you saying that they would still get paid those too even if they injured themselves due to their own stupidity?

Surely some players are above this match payment stuff?

I'd imagine, for example, tha Judas would be on a set salary within the cap and an additional agreed salary in brown paper bags, ireespective of games played or turnovers created.
