Fairly simple question. How does the left change its approach to win power? What are they doing wrong? What are they doing right? Do they need large scale changes to policy or minor tinkering to messaging or do you think they have just been unlucky and their luck will eventually improve?

Looking for interesting discourse here. No monkey poo throwing from either side.

Go to a pub where workers (tradies, truckies, construction worker) hang out on a friday night, they should the ALP's bread and butter.
Big turn off's
1 PC/ identity politics: shove it up ya rusty bullet hole
2 Climate change: just another tax on the working man
3 Immigration: The ALP and the working class are miles apart

Education.

But that is constantly de-funded and looked down on.

An uneducated population is a controllable population.
There is a reason that we've been told for years that research and evidence is elitist. 'There is no evidence that smoking is bad for you'.

Get all the unions to go on strike, for a month.

People will whinge, Scummo will mistake that anger as a green light for Work Choices III.

People are more educated than ever before (compare number of people with bachelors level of education to 30 years ago) and the education system is far more ideologically left than it was in past generations.

The left was at it greatest height when it was a movement of high school educated people. Now that it is the movement for the tertiary educated it can’t win. Kim Beazley Snr’s “dregs of the middle class”.

What if the propagandised education system actually leads people to discover they’ve been lied to all along?

The perception is that progressive govts have gotten too 'progressive' for the common voter. Too much, too soon. People/voters do not like change and uncertainty.

Conservative govts are now where progressive govts were 15-20 years ago.

There has never been a bigger collection of s**t stains in power, in this country, than there is right now.

The really sad part is that it should be an absolute cake walk for Labor and also progressive govts the world over but while they continue to perpetuate the status quo, conservative govts will continue to remain in power and thrive for the forseeable future.

The right wing fringes control the internet .There's one progressive meme to every ten rwnj memes, facebook is full of rwnj conspiracies.A lot of people who vote have no idea and get influenced by the internet.
It's too easy to spread disinformation now, Zuckerberg just lets it all pass. Progressives need to win the internet war . Fake news needs to be removed from the net.

Wait for the boomers to die off.

What are they doing wrong?
Bad marketing. Corporations can hire the best ad men, who are great at making people believe bullshit (eg. climate change is a hoax, environmentalism is evil, all refugees want to rape you, being a dickhead to people is the most important human right). The centre-left do have plenty of good policies, they just can't sell them to an extraordinarily self-centred electorate. Appealing to tolerance, compassion or the environment might work for the young, but the old don't care about any of these things and they're greater in numbers.

The centre-left are trying too hard to be gentlemanly, calm, rational and dignified. They're stuck in the 1990s, Jeb Bush mentality, thinking voters still like seeing that in politicians, when that time is long gone. They need to embrace the Donald Trump era and get right down into the gutter with him. Call Scott Morrison out for the pathetic, pants-shitting vermin he is. Appeal to the base selfishness of voters. Tell them how their money is being stolen by paedophile fat cats. Show them that the National Party are China's little bitch boys. Pull no punches. Fight dirty. But don't attack them on the basis of pointing out bigotry, because the average voter has shown plainly that they have no compassion for anyone who doesn't look or think like them.

Well, that was always a pretty forlorn hope.

I don't agree. Conservative parties actually had environmental policies 20 years ago. Margaret Thatcher, for example, was a great friend of the environment. Nowadays they pay lip service to it while letting their mates in business do whatever they please.

You'd think that Morrison and Trump would also be the last straw. But no, they will both s**t it in in their respective next elections.

...........and do you think left voters will take the slightest notice of the absolute shambles in their own back yard?

Spot on. It's time to be blunt, to the point and unfiltered. Stop allowing the right to dictate the standard of debate. Time to stop worrying about what you think you can't say and just call it as you see it.

Unfortunately the media would be nowhere near as compliant if a leader from the left took such a stance.

Lied to about what specifically?

The ALP lost the last election by picking a war with middle class mum and dad investors. I'm a hardcore fan of workers rights (aka unionist) and I voted for the LNP in the last federal election.

Granted, I still feel dirty, but dirty money is better than no money.
Oh, so you're a sucker who fell for simple lies. Interesting.

Here is an example, Evolved1
In another attack, an assailant beat an elderly man with a sack of quarters and then flung him in his wheelchair onto the patio cement. At times, half the nurses in my unit are on disability from assaults or attempted rape.
How have things come to this? After the deinstitutionalization movement of the 1960s and the introduction of effective antipsychotic medications, most hospitals were emptied of “regular” — largely nonviolent — mentally ill patients; those vacancies were filled by the growing number of people who were successfully pleading not guilty for reason of insanity.
But state hospitals are ill-prepared to deal with these often dangerous and violent persons. A large part of the problem stems from our legal system, where the notion of patients’ rights has triumphed over common sense and safety. For example, despite criminally insane patients being remanded by the courts for psychiatric treatment, many states allow them to refuse both therapy and medication.

To a (paleo)-conservative the answer is obvious, the violently mentally ill should be separated from all other people. But modern left wing dogma asserts this is inhumane, and in failing to understand that some people are born irrevocably bad, subjects the inhumanity to the innocent.

It takes hundreds of thousands of dollars of education to convince someone of outright falsehoods that your average tradie has figured out.

From what I'm reading here, it sounds like people would like the centre-left to resemble the 5 Star Movement that governs Italy, which advocates the expansion of public services and environmentalism, while taking a tough line on migration and not getting involved in identity politics. In fact I can find hardly anything about their social policies besides supporting gay marriage.

Now you're speaking from a gendered perspective.

What about their sandwich makers and children think?
