Balmey thinks his Ditterich hit was 1978 (from Open Mike interview with Mike Sheahan).

According to AFL Tables, that match was played in Round 3 at MCG, and it was a draw (exactly the same result as occurred in 1980 between these to teams, also in Round 3).

After that 1978 game, Balmey played the following week (against Geelong). In other words, he was not suspended!

:openmouth:
See, accidental...play on!
Only time I liked the white maggots...

I remember him being a very very good and smart player even without the thuggery. When he and Mclean shared the forward line it was fun times. When big Mal came over it got even funnier.
I saw a bit of the tiges in the early 70s. Grand Finals in 72, 73, 74. Geez talent and toughness. Balme, McLean, McGhie. Through to Wood, Walsh & KB

Glory days indeed. Wayne Walsh could go when it got heated, surpisingly perhaps. I thought saint francis was tough in the true sense. The other guy from the prev decade who was pretty handy was TJewell. Again, surprising.

Was crying out for him for years.Got the house in order and set up the the football department the way it should be no nonsense .Massive influence on our flag.Toys with the media.Don't underestimate how his experience at cats and pies loosing Finals and then bouncing back will benefit us this year.

balme's contribution overrated. dimmer is the true richmond god and carried us to the flag
there were people here who wanted to sack him not long ago. the support team the club put around him together with him being less hands-on has made a difference. at least part of that should be credited to balmy.

Balmey isn’t just a master of the game of footy, he’s also a master of the game of life. The bloke controls every media interaction he’s in so effortlessly they don’t even realise. There’s no better equipped person in the country to represent a football club.

If that’s what Balmy actually did. I’m not so sure. Structures were already in place, even the people (yes Caracella) were there. Balmy did take the media heat and is a strong calming influence with a good footy head. I don’t think many on here really know what he does.
Dimma is the man. Copped the flak, deserves the kudos (which he would deflect to his players and coaches).
